Obtaining a breeding pair of Oscars

PDF Print E-mail

Left to their own devices, Oscars will happily lay eggs on a regular basis if they favour the conditions in their aquarium.  Most people obtain a male and female Oscar by sheer luck, and then one day, notice lots of little white eggs in their tank.  If you've got the room, it's nice to have a breeding pair of Oscars.  It's lovely to watch them going through the breeding rituals and then laying their eggs.  You feel a little closer to nature.

On this page are various videos of a batch of Oscars that have been purchased in the hope of obtaining a pair, even a couple of pairs.  We start off from when they were around 2 1/2 inches long.  We are going to follow this batch of Oscars until the day they hopefully start laying eggs.  I hope to show you what to look out for if you want to go down the same route.  Watching these videos will also give you a very good example of the growth rate of the Oscar Fish. Please don't attempt to replicate what you see in the videos unless you have got a very large tank that is in excess of 100 gallons. It will take many months for the Oscars to finally pair off.  You probably won't know you have a breeding pair until you see them laying eggs. Having several Oscars will just increase your chances of having a male and a female. If you do try this in a small tank, you'll just end up with poor water conditions that you won't be able to control.
