Damn Cheeky Oscar!!! 1 Year ago Karma: 12
I have tried plastic plants, and real plants. Unless the plants are plastic and WELL tied down, they don't last. My Oscar destroys them in no time. I just tried a real plant, tied it down, very securely, as much as you can without tearing it to bits, and in no time at all, the whole plant was torn to shreds!!!!! Little bugger.

I bought a lot of sturdy commercial plastic plants (like you can get from bargain shops) and glued them into my aquarium with silicon. I have been doing this for years without any problems from Oscars. I soak the plants for a month or so prior so leech any toxins. If they show any rust then throw them away.

Only use plastic plants that cover the wire that holds them up - just in case.

if Oscars were human beings, most of them would have an ASBO slapped on them most of the time

Oscars love pulling plants up, its what they do. Its why most oscar keepers dont bother with plants real or plastic.

I use those plastic plants with suckers on to cover up pipework (put some lead round the end of each stem or they end up floating). I have been told its the plants in the substrate they mostly did up. So plants growing on wood or plastic plants stuck to wood are usually ok

I just had to Google ASBO! For all you guys in the states, it's the UK equivalent of Criminal Mischief. I've dodged that charge before

Keeping fish is only as hard as you choose to make it.
