I keep seeing websites stating that oscars usually only grow to be about 12 inches, but I've had mine for about a year and a half, and he's grown to be 16 inches in length in a 55 gallon tank. Of course he's the only one in there besides a pleco which has also grown way past his length( almost 10 inches). I swear there must be steroids in the water.

Welcome to the website

For future reference, could I please ask you to post in the correct forum?. Your question is about Oscars so it should be posted in in "the Oscar fish"

Okay, regarding the growth rate of your Oscar. That certainly is a remarkable rate of growth within one year. How much do you feed it? Oscars will grow quickly if you feed them a lot. I certainly wouldn't expect an Oscar to be 16 inches within a year.

I have a book on Oscars at home and I recall reading that wild oscars as well as common tigers tend to grow in excess of 12" perhaps to 14-15" but that the other strains, (Reds, Albinos etc) tend to stay smaller at about 12". I'm not home so I can't reference the book exactly but in any event, 16" in length in one year is rather remarkable, especially in a 55, and really especially sharing that 55 with a rather good sized pleco too.

I would definitely consider upgrading to a 75-125 for their sake.

Welcome aboard (and please do consider what section is more appropriate for your future post topics.)

Need to give away one healthy 1 year old Oscar if you know of anyone interested. See the adoption thread for photos. Thanks!
