QUOTE: We need to address why you have got ammonia present. When you change the water, do you use water conditioner to remove the chlorine? Do you turn the filters off when you are put in the water back in? Have you been cleaning the filters at all? How much food have you been feeding, and had you been removing any uneaten food? And lastly, apart from the Oscars, how many other fish have you got?
At the risk of annoying the BOSS it does say in the post that the filter broke and a new one was purchased, this would be the cause for ammonia

I appreciate all the replies but my original question was never answered.
Is the cascade 700 canister filter good enough for my 55g tank with 2 Oscars and no tank mates? The cascade 700 canister filter runs at 185 gallons per hour.

Is the filter manufactured by a company called Penn plax, or something along those lines? This company manufactures the Cascade 700 that is suitable up to 65 gallons. So if this is the one you've got, you should be okay. However, as you already know, a 55 gallon tank is not big enough for two Oscars. Remember that Oscars grow very quickly, you haven't got a lot of time to get the need tank setup and cycle properly before the Oscars will be quite big

Most filters will say in the instructions or on the box for the tank size they are rated for. This works for community or general fish. Oscars on the other hand are very messy and need lots of filtration. For oscars you need filtration rated for a tank twice as big. So if you have a 75g tank you need filtration rated for a 150g tank. I hope this helps

if you plan on keeping the o's in the small tank until they have to be changed to the bigger one i would agree with delboy's statement about having filtration for twice the tank size and therefore buy a second 700. even if you start to cycle your new tank now you wont be able to get away with frequent water changes until the new tank is cycled.
good luck to ya
