In my opinion keeping some poly filters are essential for any fishkeeper
A poly filter is a fine sponge material. It will remove and i quote ' poly-filter removes nitrogenous compounds such as ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, medications such as copper, antibiotics; plus other pollutants such as phosphates, proteins, toxic metals, phenols and insecticides'
I keep some of these filters for emergencies for when/if things go wrong. To use it, you just place it inside your filter, you may have to remove some of you existing media to make room for it. The filter changes colour according to what it has removed giving you an idea what has gone wrong.
They are not cheap, I bought my last lot about 2 years ago and they cost about £13 each (i think). Each filter does about 30-40 gallons (uk) so it gets expensive if you have a big tank. They do sell a breeder polyfilter that does 200g
I have used one once when my nitrates in my discus tank got too high. I use a RO machine to get the water right for my discus tank, but this takes time to be produced so lots of rapid water changes are impossible. The polyfilter removed the nitrates and turned the colour expected for excessive nitrates
Having some polyfilters may just save your fish if things go wrong so i think they are money well spent
