No, sorry. Standard 55 gallon tanks are 13'' long, and oscars can grow to that length or larger... You'll probably need a 75 gallon tank(US gallons) to hold a single oscar happily. Fifty five may work, though I would definately not recommend it.

Now were drifting off topic....

But to answer your question you can build D-I-Y tanks, and i will be doing so soon. YOu can use plywood in smaller tanks, or cement and rebar in larger Please start a new topic if you have more questions on the matter as we are getting off of topic.

Thankyou,

In answer to some of the questions you have posed im sure it is possible to keep them in smaller tanks providing you are willing to carry out the maintenance on a regular basis. When i first started with Oscars i had two large pairs each in 48 x 18 x 12 tanks and they would spawn regularly so this is a clear sign that they are happy enough. However if you do have a problem in a smaller tank it will take hold quicker i.e. it is much easier for nitrates to rise in a small tank than a large tank. Also in the set up that i had the filtration was enormous compared to normal filters. The tanks i used where a minimum of twelve gallons probably utilising 3/4 filled with media. If you think of a power filter i doubt whether you would get more than a couple of litres of media. In my personal opinion and this does go against the grain of what everybody else says 36-40 gallons is ok for a pair of Oscars providing you can guarantee top notch filtration and weekly water changes of 20% without fail. as far as dimensions of that tank it needs to be a minimum of 15 inches from front to back so that the fish can turn round.48 x15 x 15 would give you aprox 40 gallons of water. would also recommend that as well as a large external power filter you should utilise some form of diy filter that would sit on top of the tank or on a shelf above the tank so that you can drastically increase the amount of media that you use. However if you cannot give your Oscars time then dont even try to attempt to keep them in this size tank

I don't really know the difference bet. gallons in the US and in the UK so I have no idea how many gallons is my tank. Anyway, I'm keepin 3 Oscars each about 3 inches long now and hoping to add another 1 about the same size. Is it gonna be OK?

my tank is 36" x 18" x 18"
