oops! I didn't put that I was going off-topic and comparing gas prices ... after I made the conversion of u.s. gallons and imperial gallons.

I apologize for that misunderstanding.

Now ... $500/yr no matter what would be great here ... but they do charge by consumption, plus utility fees, taxes, other fees, and it ends up over $1000 a year (>500 quid).

I sometimes start thinking about something and forget that you are not in my head following along

And agreed, some Os just won't get along and must be separated. A lot of Os don't get along with themselves though! (reflection)

Good to see this article has provoked some really good discussion. First of all i have to say in my experience keeping 6-8 Oscars in 150 gallons of water does not have to be hard work. Once Oscars reach adulthood they do not require feeding every day. In the wild they are opportune feeders feeding only when there is food for them to eat. if you have large Oscars and you have nitrate problems then you are probably feeding them too much. The more you feed them the bigger your filters need to be.As for water changes a few
extra pounds spent can cut your work to a minimum. Purchase a
length of hose water butt and a powerhead or pond pump and you can easily set up a system to change water effortlessly. Fill the water butt several days before your water change is due so that the water is aged. Set up the hose with the powerhead and use it to pump the water down the sink drain or to water the garden. Once you have reached the 20% mark simply switch the powerhead to the waterbutt and pump the water back in again. If the water is really cold in the butt then add a heater for a couple of hours. I would think that this could be set up for about £25 or $50. This a small price to pay to get rid of the chore of carrying buckets through
the house. Connect the water butt up to your guttering and you have instant nitrate free rainwater which is even better for your water changes. As for my fish being crammed into 110-150 gallon tanks, im sure that anyone who has seen the Oscar dvd's I have produced would see that they are not crammed at all. All of my Oscars in my system were top notch fish in health and quality. As for keeping Oscars on their own there is nothing we can compare it with in human terms. Even in prison in solitary confinement prisoners have some sort of interaction with other humans and are allowed outside for exercise. Any human being kept in the same confines as a single Oscar would suffer severe mental problems. And as for some people being sociable and not being sociable thats their choice. If you keep an Oscar on its own you take away that choice. Two Oscars well you run the risk that you are going to end up with two males which will then create problems.Four or more Oscars and you will be enthralled by the social interaction that goes on in your tank day after day. Providing a group of large Oscars with an ideal set up just needs some extra planning at the set up stage with an understanding of Oscars needs as they grow to adulthood. There not oscars but similar and just as big,it's my wolf cichlids. Now ive got two in a 60 uk gallon tank, male is 12inch female is 6inch.Ok on my tank to begin with i had 3xfluvals a 305,405 and a fx5 all media trays are just full of bio rings, but still there was a reading of ammonia i only feed them once every other day and do atleast 30% water changes every 3 days.Ive just put another fx5 on there and the ammonia is dropping,So going on what you said keeping o's in small tanks its possible but the filteration needs to be unreall!!
