jadedev created the topic: The Oscar Strikes Back (Star wars fan here)

HI All,

I kept oscars when I was a kid about 15 years ago, not too successful unfortunately. 2 fish from small to about 20cm. Lack of money, small tank and poor water quality.

This time round, I hope to do better.

Technology has got a lot better these days, filtration is better, you can get hold of bigger tanks, better medication etc, there is a lot more reliable information about Oscars that can help.

My personal opinion is that there is absolutely no excuse for keeping Oscars in a poor condition. Even if you have no access to the Internet, you can find reliable information in magazines and books. Don't bother asking the shops, they have no idea what they're talking about ;)

Well, some lfs guys do- like me- but some don't- like those freaky black girls who were feeding a pair of dead oscars, while talking about stupid teenager stuff:angry: :(

Sorry, I shouldn't have said all fish shop owners. I did mean to say a small minority. I know quite a few people who own shops who give good sound advice. But I also know of people who gave very bad advice. The problem is, you can't know everything about every fish there is. That's why I think a lot of the shop owners should advertise websites not unlike ours so that potential buyers can get what I would like to say is good advice.

I like to know if anyone here has successfully breed oscars. So what do you do with the frys?

Apart from the eggs hatching, I've never bothered any more than that. Unfortunately, my breeding pair are no longer alive. I am in the midst of trying to pair some more off. Anyway, the Fry normally die very quickly if you don't feed them properly.

And I'm glad that you mentioned "what do you do with the Fry?" this is one reason why I don't encourage people to breed Oscars just for the sake of it. Oscars can lay well over 1000 eggs and several hundred will hatch. Obviously if you just leave them to their own devices, the chances are they will all die. If they do survive and you leave them in the tank, the chances are the parents will start eating them once they start growing. But if they don't get eaten and you are left with 50 or 60 little Oscars, what are you supposed to do with them? What happens if there are no shops who want them? Unless you want to breed them for shops or selling them on to other places, I wouldn't recommend going into it seriously. You will only end up in a pickle.

1000 eggs, wow, that's a lot.

Ever since I was a child, I want to breed fish but somehow they always die before I get to that stage. Hopefully this time round, I am somewhat better prepared and more rational.

I am thinking of breeding them in bulk and sell the frys, I've found a fish wholesaler. If only I can breed an amazing colour fish, the I can give up my day job.

Mr Oscarfishlover, why did your breeding pair die?

I think they both had internal problems. The male died a couple of years ago from what I think was an internal bacteria infection. Then my female died a few weeks ago. She had stopped eating which is always a concern. Then the night before she died, she actually ate something so I thought she was okay. Then in the morning, she was dead. She looked like she had been dead for a week, it was really bizarre. I think she must have had some kind of bacterial infection that went absolutely wild in just a few hours.

It was very upsetting, she was a lovely fish

Same ting happened to my fish when I was a kid, healthy one minute, dead the next and covered with a white cocoon. And the water stunk like hell.

So this time round, I hope to keep the water clean!!!
