Dadda just gave you a bit of info overload there, I think, lol.

But he's right! What type of fish are you interested in?

Keeper of the Food Pellets of Malekith the Never Accursed, Lover of Bubbles and Airstones, and Beloved of the Rogue Violetta.

Throw yourself in- use the wrong words, try different foods, kiss random fish. It's an adventure!

I've never tried to keep an O and a JD together, but several on this forum have, and, from what I remember, it's a flip of the coin whether it will work or not. Assuming you buy two babies, the O will grow much faster than the JD, but the JD is likely to be more aggressive. Severum have the reputation of being relatively mild mannered (for cichlids).

As for stocking levels, you really should only try to keep a maximum of two large (12" +) cichlids in that tank (or only one, if you choose a large aggressive CA species) In addition to that, some dithers, for example Silver Dollars, could also be kept and might help keep the two cichlids from fighting.

Welcome to our community Shane, nice to have another person on the UK join us, we haven't got anywhere near enough people from the United Kingdom on here :-) Mind you, I suppose we are only a small country compared to the USA, it's not surprising there are many more fish keepers in the US. Anyway, if you have any questions than just ask away and we will do our best to help you.

By the way, I'm down in Brixham Devon, where are you?

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Welcome to the site Shane, I think Penn(admin) is lumping all the north American members together, a lot of them are Canadian, and most live well north of me, so they might as well be from another country! Glad to have you here, and congrats on the new set up. Look forward to seeing up and running.

There are a disproportionate number of Canadians on here. We were considered part of the "empire" once upon a time.

I am relatively new to Severums, but have found that the three I own are quite "aggressive" in their hearts. The problem is that they have these tiny mouths which does not really make them that fearsome to other fish. :P As Lamm can also attest they make a great combo with an oscar.

I think it would be a mistake to put a JD and an Oscar together in a 5 foot tank. The volume is good but the territory is not large enough for two large cichlids. Would be better to go for something smaller like a Firemouth, convict, etc. Although, to be sure, an oscar will fill the tank up all by himself nicely. They love swimming and love their space. A plec and a few SD's will likely be ok in there.

Great thanks guys so if I was going to go for a single oscar what would you stock in there to fill up without over stocking as I'm still unsure could someone post a few stocking options and how many of each fish so that I can research and see what I would like as am new to Americans thanks for all the help
