I was planning to set up a peacock cichlid tank, but then saw a Severum cichlid. I love them, but those led me to a Tiger Oscar which is even better.

But, there is where it gets difficult. Community tank vs. a single fish or a duo.

I have a 75 gallon. It would be better if I had a 150 gallon, but that is a serious tank and a bit above my budget right now. I am sure many people keep single fish and like it fine. I am still thinking about it, but in the meantime I'll continue researching.

I might do the community peacock tank now and then set up another 75 gallon later with a single Oscar - or an Oscar and a Severum.

Setting up tanks 75 gallons at a time may be the way to go. They are big enough to be interesting, but small enough to be manageable.

welcome to OFL...

wanting a community, always aim for a bigger tank... the more fish the merrier.

Hello and welcome. I keep many fish as single occupants in their own tanks. It works well, mo aggression issues, fish stress etc. The recommendation you will receive from experienced members on OFL is that a 75g tank is the bare minimum for 1 Oscar alone, no tankmates. When you see an Oscar of over a foot long and realize they can live 15yrs, you get some insight as to the accomodations and care they require. Good luck with your choice, feel free to ask anything you need.

I think I might stick to Rotkeils for now. Start with 6, wait for some to pair off and sell the others to friends.

Then keep an eye out for a nice used 100 gallon tank or 120 gallon tank for a pair of Tiger Oscars later on.

Thanks for great forum and great website about these fantastic fish.

Good thinking, I'm sure that a larger tank will become available very soon and you can get your Oscars :-)

In the same manner that a 75 is advised as minimum for a single Oscar, a 125 and 6ft length is the low mark for a pair. If you are seriously considering a pair of O's in the future, keep your tank search targeted on BIG. I have a pair of adults in a 6x2x2 180g. Very comfortable for them. Oscars are big fish, need big space.
