sandychild created the topic: Hello! I`m new in the forum

I am from Argentina. I have a lutino oscar. He is 6" long now. He was 3", 5 months ago when I bought him. The tank is 30 gal -120 litres-. I am planning to upgrade the tank to an 50 gal -200litres-. I know O`s grow and he will need more room to live. But first I need the money and have to redecorate the living room. These two things mean negotiating with my wife and my 5 children. I use undergravel filter, prehistoric one but with good results. I do 40% water changes a week and once a month a 60/70%.
I will take some photos/videos when I will have a new celular phone with a good camera.
I know the filtering system is not the best but I compensate it with the water changes. The water is well water and is hard and alkaline (8,5 PH
aprox.)
Thank you for accepting me in the forum and I wish I can learn and share a lot. I have consulting the website since some years, Oscars are my favourite fish. Sorry for my raw english.

kind goodbye,

sandy

Hi there, and welcome to our forum. I'm glad you understand the importance of having an aquarium that is big enough. If you need any help or advice you only have to ask :-)

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Hello Sandy and welcome to OFL. Your fish in a 30g should be having more water changes, both in frequency and volume. Twice a week and as much as you can take out and still have the fish submerged. Good you recognize the need for a bigger tank. With that of course goes more filtration. The ug filter is not a good setup for large messy cichlids, of which Oscar is top of the class. If you are able, try for a new tank of 48x18 footprint and 75 US gals volume. Bigger is always better in the long run for Oscars. Again, welcome aboard, enjoy your stay.

I may not be the Boss, but I'm ALWAYS right!

Thank you. 75 gal will be good. I will consider to do only one upgrade to 75 gal. If not, the 50 gal will be short afterwards and I will have the same problem again in a few months. Meanwhile, I will increase frequency and quantity of water changes.

:)
