Hello everyone! I always loved Oscars and had a pair in a 55 gallon over a decade ago and fed them feeder fish. Little did I know that feeder fish are bad and that 55 is too small. I just put 4 babies in there but they died within a week. The pet store said something was wrong with the batch.. So I guess Im going to do a complete water change... Clean the sand and wait 48 hours before I add only 2 in there.. My setup includes marineland 400 and thought about keeping that AND going with a Fluval canister 406 maybe and I have a heater that's good up to 75 gallons. I've never used a canister before. Well I guess food wise I will stick with crickets and a good pellet. Comments or anything?

Hello and welcome to OFL. First thing I suggest is to have your tank completely cycled before trying any Oscars. A new from scratch setup will have to go through a period.. several weeks.. where an ammonia source... NOT baby Oscars.. will have to be added to let beneficial bacteria develop in your filters bio media. I suggest using a 12-20 Giant Danios population. Feed and tend to those hardy fish for a couple of months. When you get a 0 level of ammonia and nitrite, and some signs of nitrate, then you are ready for an Oscar. A 48x18 tank of 75gals is good for 1 Oscar only, and after a year or so the fish will make that look small. You will need a canister filter for heavy bio filtration.

Do you think my marineland 400 will be good to keep WITH a canister?

The 400 is a good bio filter, not the greatest for mechanical. Better would be an Aquaclear 110, but by all means use both. Oscar is a big, fast growing messy fish and any Oscar tank needs heavy filtration.

Yes, a canister that has around 300 gph flow rate or more should suffice for your 75 with one oscar in it. You should shoot for a minimum of 10 x gph flow rate. I always over filter mine at around 15-20 x for flow rate.

Examples that might work are an Ehiem 2217 or greater, Filstar XP-L. If you want a cheaper filter go for a Sunsun 4 stage canister.

A better HOB, imo, than the Emperor is the AC 110, but if you are short on funds your current filter will do (along with the addition of a canister).

Think about throwing a sponge filter in the tank too. Good mechanical and bio filtration to supplement everything a pretty cheap too.

I already bought the 400 when I bought the tank so that's why I was asking if it mattered when I buy a canister. I guess Ill start looking at tank mates since 2 Oscars are too big for a 75 gallon.

its better to have more filtration rather than not enough.

hi there

1. welcome to ofl from the far east.
2. my suggestion: just two Oscars in the 75g with no tankmates.
3. and in no time, your Oscars will also outgrow the 75g
