That makes sense. From that you see that nitrate was at dangerous levels prior, because your 70% w/c reduced the level by the same 70%. And you still show ammonia. The Whisper filters are not of poor quality, they just dont have the capacity to manage a small tank with an adult Oscar. As stated before, filter ratings dont apply to aquariums holding large messy cichlids. What was the fish's normal diet, and how often did you feed him? Specific brand of food please.

Hikari Cichlid Staple
Omega One Freeze Dried Blood worms
Tetra Cichlid Floating Cichlid Sticks
Wardley dried shrimp
In the first few months we fed him goldfish but stopped that a long time ago.
Not sure how to correct water.
Thank you

Feed is not terrible, but not very good either .Hikari is good food, but the staple is the bottom of their lineup. Bloodworm should be an occasional treat. Tetra and Wardley are quite poor quality. Hopefully we get this fish somewhat better, and when he looks to eat, a better food with some vitamin supplement will be in order. You are on the right path with large volume water changes. Using Prime at each change will bind existing ammonia to ammonium making it less harmful. I recommended large changes every 3 days... lets go with every 2nd day, as Prime works for up to 48hrs. So, be patient, change the water again tomorrow.

Whoops, my bad. Shift work messes with my internal calendar. Water change on Thursday. You have been overfeeding, fish has been producing excessive waste, fouling water all the quicker. Adult Oscar should only be fed every 2nd day, and only once per feed day. You may also need to seriously clean his gravel. Removing it all together would be a good idea. Its likely holding a lot of debris, again, fouling water quicker.

Thank you. He hasn't eaten for 3 to 4 days and not interested. I will do a large water change again on Thursday. Do I correct Ph or do anything else for water quality? I feel bad not giving him meds....but we need to wait? What type of filter system do you need for an Oscar? Thank you

3-4 days no feed is trivial. In your case its actually a good thing. Oscar can go an absurd amount of time without eating. Several weeks no problem. He has had enough meds, its hard on the fish. Ideal filtration for a cichlid tank is a canister filter for biological filtration. Processing ammonia into nitrite and then to nitrate. Accompany that with a large capacity hob for mechanical duties. Mechanical means trapping waste, solids and gunk in general. My preferred canisters are the API Filstar line. My hobs are Aquaclear 110's. Eheim makes an excellent canister for small/medium sized tanks. Its the Classic 600, or sometimes called the model 2217. Do nothing with the water except keep it clean. No additives, no meds.

We want to thank you so much for helping us. Is it worth investing in the canister filter that you suggested and getting the hob? Does his water stand quality with this type of filter and the amount of water changes with Seachem Prime give him a chance? Thank you :)
