deanob06 created the topic: Semi-newbie forgot to cycle

So I have had Oscars and other fish before and have never cycled the water first and forgot to do it this time before I got my Oscars. I now have 4 Oscars and a pleco in my tank. What can I do to help keep my fish healthy while the bio filters cycle?

Welcome to our community.

Are you saying that you have just set a tank up and put some fish in it, but the tank hasn't been cycled beforehand?

How big is the aquarium and what sort of filtration system are you using?

You've really got about this back to front. You should really cycle the aquarium first and then get all your precious fish. If indeed the tank has got to be cycled fully with all these fish in it than they are going to be exposed to some very dangerous toxins.

If you can tell us what sort of aquarium filtration you've got we can advise more.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

I have a 65gal tank with a aqueon quietflow 75 filter says good for up to 90 gal tanks and has 400gal per hour flow rate. This model also has specialty filters for reducing ammonia. Just wondering if a couple extra water changes will help me keep my fish alive and yes I realize the tank is too small for all of these fish.

I should add that I got a tank with a 17"depth instead of the normal 12" so that they have an easier time when they get bigger.

IMO-if your main concern is the health of your fish-return them to the shop. Ask if they will hold them until your tank is ready, if not-take the hit and put it down to experience.

Once your tank is cycled, pick the ONE that you like the best and enjoy.

If you are set on having four-upgrade your tank to somewhere in the 300 gallon region and cross your fingers-there are no guarantees with large cichlids.

I realise that this is not what you want to hear but it is however, the reality of your situation.

You have an unmanageable situation. You need to change 75% of the water possibly twice a day. Oscars are a big bioload fish, even when small. Plecos are in a whole other category of filth. Filter ratings dont apply to tanks holding messy fish. Your filter cant handle even 1 Oscar, cycled or not. The fish, even if you go above and beyond with maintenance, are being subject to what amounts to abuse, and will suffer long term adverse effects. muddy has the best suggestion.. return all, cycle from scratch. In actual fact, the tank will only be suitable for one Oscar for no longer than a year. If this is your keeper tank, a cichlid that grows to no more than 8ins would be far better off. Literally dozens of options there.
