LovesLC created the topic: Oscar seems afraid of me

Hi OFL
I have what is probably a very silly issue...but one of my Oscars does not seem to like me. When I walk in the room one of them does her little food dance and will eat from my hand. But the other will stop what he is doing and hide in his fake log.
I try not to scare him when I do water changes and always bring with me his favorite foods when I go see them.
I guess I'm worried that he is not happy, or that I'm not providing something that I should be. I am fairly new to Oscars.
I did have to recently separate him from my other Oscar, as he would injure her and my dividers never stayed together for very long. So I put them in separate tanks.
The tanks are next to each other and they do interact through the sides of the tank. Sometimes quivering tails, sometimes flaring gills a bit and sometimes making exaggerated, swish' movements with their tails.
Do you think it is maybe too stressful to be next to each other? He seems to not eat as much as he used to as well...Or maybe he is just shy and that is his personality?
Both tanks are bare bottom so I can more easily keep them clean, but they have fake plants, logs and caves to hide in if they want. Should I add some rocks at the bottom so he has something to do?
He just seems sad to me when I see him...which I know is silly since he is a fish, but that is how it appears.
I have had both for slightly over a year and they have been in separate tanks for maybe 2 months.
Thanks!

Not really sure if we can give you the answer you are looking for to be honest. Maybe the best thing to do is just persevere, hang around the tank a bit more often so that he finally gets used to you. If you keep your distance because you think you are scaring him then things will never improve.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Thanks for the reply...so do you think it is Ok that the tanks are next to each other and they can see each other? That would not be stressing him out?
I think he may have had a better appetite before when they shared a tank because of competition for food, come to think of it.
He eats, just not as enthusiastically as before
