cazzic created the topic: Hi.

I'm new. I've recently bought 4 baby tiger oscars and I love them. They are adjusting to their new home wonderfully.

I have absolutely no idea what else to write... I am in Perth, Australia.... um... one of my oscars has been named Dempsey, still getting to know the others before I decide to name them.

They live with a catfish called Gonigan (who spends most of his time hiding in the ornamental great wall) and 4 convicts (who are also unnamed at this time)

Hi there and welcome to our community. If you have any questions then don't hesitate to ask.

Why not post some photos of your fish and tank for our members to see, everybody likes to see other people's fish.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Hello and welcome to the site. A quick caution... watch those Convicts, especially if there is a pair. Small, but very violent when breeding, they can easily kill all your Oscars.

Sure, I'll see if I can get some today.

Really? Even with the big size difference? I do have a big tank, however (450L) so they've got a lot of room to stay away from one another.

Hahah,... I forgot about the Dempsey ciclids. I chose the name because it has an Irish derivation meaning Arrogant. And he's an arrogant so and so

Another friendly caution if I may... your tank is way too small to house all those fish any more than a few months. Convicts, other than their temper, no big deal, they stay small. Well cared for Oscars should grow about an inch per month until almost a year old. By then you may have a foot long cichlid, in your case 4 of them. If, and its a big if they get along for the duration, you will need a tank in excess of 1200 litres, 300 US gals and an 8ft length. This is the reality of keeping fast growing, large , messy cichlids. Big fish need big space, massive filtration and a dedication to throwing thousands of gallons of fresh water at them. Per month.

Thanks! I was already aware of that and we only intend on keeping two of them. We bought four with the intention of on-selling two when we learned which ones are best suited to the setup we want. Unfortunately, at this stage, I don't think we'll be keeping my favourite one (Dempsey) because s/he is a bit of a roughian and keeps going after all the other fish in the tank. If we keep that one, we'll only be able to have one fish in the tank - her/him.
