Hello! I've always had Oscars, usually one in a 75 gallon with no issues, kept them healthy, etc. Now I have one 3" baby red in a 125 gallon by himself (or herself) and I planned on getting a second for companionship, but will the one already in there be territorial? thoughts?

My background and new light are on the way, I might add one nice silk plant, running 2 Eheims and 1 Fluval.... but anyway, here you go :)

PS - he's hiding under the driftwood, I'll get a good photo tonight.

being ahead may create territorial instinct but by netting him/her for a while and put it back with the new one may erase the supremacy... good luck!

Hello and welcome to OFL. If you want a second Oscar I would add asap. If you wait too long the Red will have claimed the whole tank. Small size and lots of space is an advantage now. I think you could increase the odds by creating 2 distinct areas, one for each fish to call its own. Looks like you have maybe 2 pcs of wood in the middle? Perhaps one on each end, maybe add a couple good sized rocks to create boundaries. Couple plastic plants to break up sight lines. No guarantees though, you can never predict cichlid behavior. Best of luck, keep us posted!

Friday, I added more driftwood and a black Oscar (he might be a tiger, don't know yet) the same size as Red. I thought Red would be the one to get bullied because he was so chill and timid... how wrong I was. He immediately started biting and stalking poor Blackie, and Blackie would just swim back up to him to hang out and cuddle only to get attacked again. I should have thought this through before choosing who went together. Red came from a Petsmart tank by himself and Blackie came from my local fish store's community Oscar tank where they swam together in harmony (I got Red first/should have got them both from my LFS). For a few hours I had to keep gently redirecting Red's aggression with my long net until I gave up and went to bed. I didn't have a tank separator, so the chips were going to fall where they fall. The next morning I woke to Red swimming around and Blackie tagging along. No aggression since the first night, but I really do feel for Blackie. He is so cuddly and friendly towards Red, but Red basically ignores him. Awww. Well I hope one day Red wakes up and is happy Blackie is there with him.

Please excuse the poor cell phone video quality! As soon as I get a chance I'll run by Best Buy and pickup a recorder (and I'll also figure out how to post videos directly in a post). Lastly, I was going to call them Ragnor and Jax, but Red and Blackie stuck, so there you go :)
