BadAndy created the topic: Love this site BUT....

I got my Tiger Oscar 5 days ago. I named him Chuck Norris. Chuck Norris dosn't swim, the water moves around Chuck Norris. He was given to my by my brother. As it sat, this fish was just way to aggressive for the other fish to handle. (other fish being tiger oscars) I had no tank, no gravel, nothing. Within a few hours I had gotten my hands on a 50gal tank, a filter and used some candle holders to add some shape to the tank. I knew that I was going to love feeding him live food so I got some fish from a friend. He breeds mollys and guppys. He went to town on the fry. It got messy, so I went out and got one of those ugly sucker fish. And he seems to have no issue with it. But I noticed that there were plenty of scraps on the bottom of the tank. Chuck is a slob. Well, I ran it around in my head and I simply hit the store and looked around. One of the kids workin in the store suggested a crafish. Well fine, I wasnt too sure about it. BUT it worked out well. He has no interest in the crafish, the crafish often goes after the Chuck in hopes of stealing his meal. I plan on adding some plants and I want to have a sand tank with driftwood and smooth stones. But that will come in time. I know I have gone on and on here. But I just wanted to share my excitement. I knew virtually nothing about oscars, and in the past 4 days, I have grown by leaps and bounds. This site has also offered MUCH information in the 2 hours that I have been reading. What I have found though. Is often, answers can be simple, but it is drawn out. Id like to suggest a point form section for those seeking answers on the fly. Also, what excites me is I have seen many images of Tiger Oscars. But chuck seems to be very unique in pattern. Anyone know the reason for this. (yes, i am aware that adults differ from babys)

Thanks for your comments regarding the website. Constructive criticism is something that can only improve this website so I appreciate you bring up these points. Can you explain a little more in detail what you are suggesting, I'm not quite with you.

There is a search box in the top right-hand corner on every page. This can be used like any search engine, only it will find relevant content on this website. So for instance if you type in "lump on Oscars Chin" it will give you various links to pages that this phrase is mentioned on.

Many thanks for your input. Maybe you'd like to use the suggestions and feedback forum in future for any relevant information regarding improving the website :)

I just felt that there was a mass amount of detail as per the foods and other subjects in relation towards oscars. Yes, you do bring everything up, i just felt that from time to time, it went on or was the same thing I had read 5 min ago. I will go over what I read again if you would like. Im just grateful that there is a site like this. But I was looking to soak vast amounts of info in less time. And quick on the fly question... A friend heard about my revisited fish hoby and just showed up with 2 Turquoise Severum Cichlids. I cant say no to any animal that is in need of a home. Thus far. The oscar has just stayed away from the pair. BUT they are a breeding pair. Said to spawn every 3 weeks. The last spawn was 3 days ago. I KNOW that I will most likely need a bigger tank, or a second tank but how long do you think Chuck Norris will last in the same tank as them? The female is about the size of a womans hand, the mail is half her size, but poor lil Chuck is just a lil 3 inch baby Tiger Oscar

Severum are one of the more peaceful cichlids. However, they can be territorial and could certainly be aggressive if they've got young. Your situation will only be made worse if you're keeping the fish in a small tank. If you had a very big tank for instance, aggressive behaviour is less likely because the fish can get away from each other. If the tiger Oscar keeps its distance, they may not bother. However, being very small, it is very vulnerable. So it depends on what sort of tank you are using. Severum do require a tank of around 45 gallons so you can see that you do need quite a large tank, not including the Oscar.

Okay, I've taken on board what you have said and I probably do repeat myself. When I get a chance, I'll just go through what I have written and maybe take some stuff out that is repeating itself. Mind you, even though I do repeat myself, people don't seem to see it and e-mail me asking those exact questions. Maybe I should repeat myself a bit more then people may see it

Well ya, often people dont seem to register what they read. Or simply didnt read what you took the time and effort to write. But. I am eternally thankful that you have taken the time to organize this site. And you keep active with it. I look forward to chatting with others on here and getting more ideas and good advice. As it turns out, I have a 30 gal tank. something in there. give or take a lil. But these fish I just got are MUCH larger than i expected. BUT lucky for me, I have gotten a lead on a 110 gal tank. With the stand, filter, pump, all that stuff. the only downside is it has a bad seam on the front corner. I took the time to read how to correct this issue. and am confident I can fix it. And yes, I do have exp. with this. I had a 75 gal tank for my turtles several years back. so no worries there. Thanks again for all the effort. I hope all on here enjoy it as much as I do.
