Hey everyone. Im new to Oscars as of this past month.

I got a 50 gallon tank for the mean time to house my pair.

I started off with one black/orange tiger about 2" long. He looked so bored and lonely in that huge tank i had to get another and begin scoping out larger tanks.

So now i have him and a white Oscare with orange stripes and black fins. Ill take some pics of them both soon. I also plan to house them in a 100 gallon tank with a pleco.

For the next few month they are in the 50 gallon tank in my office at work. That tank will soon be used for ciclids as the Oscars grow.

Anyhow im feeding mini pellets right now and the black one rarely eats. He has been in the tank for a week now and is still very timid. The white has only been in the tank a day or so and he swims like crazy (same size) and gluped up about 10 pellets yesterday; while the black one ate about 3. They were not fighting over food; the black just didnt seem interested.

Anyhow, any general tips you guys can give me? I keep my water about 80 degrees the best i can and have a air stone, 70 gallon filter running 75% and some cover stones and rubber weeds in the tank. I shut down one light at night for them too; unno if that is needed or not.

Welcome to the forum

It's good that you are thinking about a new tank, you will definitely need to be thinking about one in six months time.

As long as they are eating, you shouldn't have to worry. They might be a little timid to begin with. I'm a little confused when you talk about your filter and 75%. Can you elaborate a little more on that. There's no problem with air stones, they add a little more oxygen into the water, which is certainly good when it's very warm. As for lighting, remember that where Oscars come from its not that light. Yes, it's very sunny most of the time, but they live under overhanging trees where it's quite dark. I should limit the amount of time you put your lights on. I put my lights on for about three hours in the evening. Always turn the lights off at night so it's nice and dark. You'll find that they go to sleep quite quickly when it is in darkness. There is a possibility that your Oscars are timid because of the bright lights. Try limiting the lights to just three hours a day and see how they behave.

What i mean by my filter running about 75% is it is adjustable. There is a little pipe on the top that i can slide over and it slows the flow rate some. If i recall its for 70-100 gallon tanks and on full bore it was pumping some major water and seemed to be causing some rough water as it shot it back into the tank. So i turned it down a smidgle.

As for my lights, thanks for the tip. The hood has two lights, one on left, one on right. I shut the one down at night when i leave the office. Ill make sure to shut them both off from now on at night.

Yea the black is very timid; i hope he grows out of that.

Its amazing how when he is scared or something he turns almost brown...then a bit later he turns back black again. The white one don't seem scared of anything so he should be fun to feed some fish in later time.

Would it be wrong to toss a guppie or two in with them? I figure when they are large enough to eat them they will and then ill know they can feed on fish.

There's nothing wrong with feeding your Oscars live fish. However, you have got to remember that fish that you buy from a fish store may contain diseases because of the way they are often treated. Guppies are very easy to breed, I would be reluctant to feed my Oscars on anything but homebred feeder fish.

I started keeping fish when i was around seven or eight years old, im 47 now. I have had coldwater tropical and marine and keep fish because they fascinate me, at times, for whatever reason, i have stopped keeping them but am always drawn back by that fascination. I have kept and bred many species and have had probably around 30 different large Oscars and grown on hundreds and hundreds of fry. In all the time i have kept tropical fish i have never seen the need to feed a fish another fish. Now i know that fish are part of the staple diet of Oscars in the wild but we have so many other foods available form the shops and from our gardens. I do not see the need to watch an Oscar hunt down another fish, especially one that it cant eat and the result is a fish that suffers until it dies on the bottom. There are lots of live food that you can feed to your Oscar without the risk of them eating a diseased fish. River shrimps are an excellent food, meal worms are readily available by mail order or at local stores as are crickets. Many meals can be found in the garden like worms snails and woodlice. As thew title of this site suggests we are obviously all oscar fish lovers but are we all fish lovers?

I agree with feeding them bugs and such until they can eat a fish and get nutrition from the fish.

But to not watch the Oscar hunt and eat its natural prey is missing half the fun of this sort of fun.

Sort of like not taking a beagle rabbit hunting.

When my Oscar is large enough he is gonna get fish as a treat every Friday.
