charlietheoscar created the topic: charlie just sitting

hello I am new to oscars and I have one lil one who is just sitting in one place not interacting at all. It likes to get against the heater and just stay put . He wont eat today either the other one is lively. I took my water to the petshop and everything is normal. I even bought Charlie some different food but nothings working. The petshop manager said "well maybe its gonna die". I sure hope not any advice? Oh my tank is 55 gallons and my oscars are very little. In January im getting an 80 gallon.

Well, from the comments of pet store manager, I wouldn't hold much hope in any advice he gives you, what an insensitive thing to say. He am just telling you the water is okay isn't good enough. You really need to do it yourself at your own home. The fact that the fish is not doing anything and is very inactive is not something Oscars do. They sometimes do this when you first get them but from my experience, Oscars are not the sort of fish that sit around in one spot for too long, especially when they are very young, and especially if there's food around. How long have you had this and see if you can get some water tests so you can do it yourself. Also, try leaving the lights out and see how he reacts then

Ill get the strips tommorrow. We got them last week. Charlie is swimming around a little more today but not much. He did eat a few pellets but he spits them out after a couple of seconds. He got worse about sitting after I cleaned the tank with the vaccum, Also the kids are worried about him and keeps tapping the glass at him my husband told them not to do that anymore and today when he thinks there alone he swims around as long as nobody is by the tank. Should I get them some fake plants I have decor but no plants. Also I leave the lights on 24 hours a day should I turn them off. Thanks for all the help. sorry I have so many questions but Im new to oscars

Don't leave the lights on for any more than around six hours a day. An Oscars environment in the wild is very dimly lit as they tend to forage underneath overhanging trees and amongst mangrove roots.

You mustn't tap on the glass, fish can be sensitive to these kind of actions.

Fake plants are okay to make the tank looked nice. Obviously that's all they will do unlike real plants which can help to remove nitrates. However, Oscars like destroying real plants so if I was here, I would even bother with real plants.

Thanks for the advice on the lights and everything else. Should I turn them off at night or just during the day?Sadly to say Charlie has died. I thought he was getting better when I woke this ,morning he was swimming and eating, then all of a sudden he did a spiral to the bottom of the tank, then he flopped around for about 10 minutes , then died. I am so sorry that Charlie died, I do hope Bailey makes it ok.

Very sorry to hear about your loss, unfortunately these things do happen. This is when you need to check your water. I don't like the strips, I prefer the chemical tests.

You need to be checking ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. The Oscar could have died from natural causes, it could have been ill before you got it. On the other hand, there could be something wrong with the water that cause this, we want to try and save the other fish if possible if something is wrong with the water.

As for the lights, turn them off at night, the Oscars prefer that to sleep in.
