pooky_84 created the topic: Hey!!!

Hey. Pretty new here to OFL. My name's alyce, I'm from Hobart, Tasmania down in Australia. I have owned fish for aver a year now, and only got my little Oscar 2 months ago. He's still relatively small, 5", but growing fast. I had fish when I was little, but like most parents do, they give their children fish in a bowl, (with no filtration or supervision) and expect the little things to live. I was so devastated that my fish kept dying that I forgot about them for years. Until my friend took me to her and her partners place, and they had a massive tank set up in their living room. It was saltwater tropical, but it was so cool. From there, my passion has come back and now have three tanks in my bedroom, of relatively large size, and growing.!! It's so hard not to keep buying thr littlr critters, they are just so damn cute! What else can I say?.. enuf 4 now, Alyce.

G'day Alyce (sorry, couldn't resist that, I bet you hate being stereotyped?)

Anyway, nice to have someone from so far away. We have a few members from Australia, I don't think we have got any one from Tasmania so it's nice to have you on board.

Look forward to you joining in the conversations. Please feel free to join in any topic, you don't have to be answering any one's questions, it's nice to be social. This particular website/forum is only been running since December so is relatively new. However, it is doing extremely well with new members nearly every day.

Haha. Yeah, I guess it's typical for us to be quoted by that, and sooo many others!! except the whole "shrimp on the bbq" saying, I never really wanted to put shrimps on the bbq, just a big juicy steak.!! But G'day is definantly how I greet people. Down here in Tazzie especially in Hobart, (after travelling to the mainland) I found not only do we have our own unique greetings, but we really slang our words together. Imeanwereallydon'ttakeabreak, maybeonceortwiceinoursentences! haha. If you read that, we really don't break our words when we talk, we tend to talk really fast, AND really cut back on the ends of words if we can. Some have evolved, or exactly the opposite, we call them Rokebiens. They aren't the classic bogans, the're usually completely NOT understandable, mumble, and in some cases, in bus malls, are really very violent. But in all cases, they're very scary!!!! Anyway, you'll find we talk alot too. Usually about nothing, or maybe I think that's me?!! haha, I think it may be just me. BUT....I love my little Oshkosh sooo much. He lached onto my finger today whilst I was feeding him, not hard, but it did surprise me. I have four fighting fish also, who all eat the food off my finger, and rip with all their might. Oshie surprised me with how strong a fish can be. even though they are so small. Ans yes, I get such a soaking when I need to remove him with a net. I try to do the best by him, so I don't mind smelling like fish! hehe. Thanx 4 the greeting MATE!! Alyce.

Shrimps, big juicy steaks, I will take the lot. I went into town yesterday evening and I think I smell three barbecues going on the way down. Summer is almost here in England. Having said that, the last week or so has been absolutely gorgeous, very warm and sunny. Apparently we are in for a scorching summer, so the weathermen say. We will have to wait and see

Oh I would kill for a nice warm summer. And to have summer when we're supposed to. In Tazzie, we get whatever the day decides to give us. In the middle of winter, we get scorching hot days, and in the middle of summer we get freezing cold.!!! Stupid huh?

What you need to do is find some way of moving Tasmania to the Northern Part of Australia

I've always fancied Australia, it's always been a place I wanted to go. However, after watching Wolf Creek, I'm not so sure now

Haha. Yeah, I guess it did make an impact on how people view Australia. There are so many cases of backpackers etc going missing in the outback. One really sick one where he burried the bodies of like more than 11 people in the bushland near his home, but stupidly kept momentos from the victims in his house like trophies. His whole family were not very well in the head! But down here in Tazzie you don't get anything near that bad, well not as frequently. If you have heard of Matrin Bryant you'll know. Like 10 years ago, in a place called Port Arthur. Port Arthur was a prison in early years for people sent in from the mainland, where most everyone was tortured, pretty miserable. It is now a tourist attraction, I have been there a couple of times myself. Anyway, 10 years ago Martin Bryant, who has mental disabilities, took a gun down there, peak hour and started to shoot anyone he saw. About 35 people were killed there that day. There is now a memorial there for those who died, a very beautiful water feature. He is now in prison in Hobart, my mum actually works there. She says he's nice to talk to, he just has problems. But other than that, we really don't have major crimes, no shooting, major robberies. Quite a few road accidents. I really like it here. But some sun would really be good.!!:silly:

Oh God, I'd forgotten about that shooting, you have reminded me of it.

I'm sure I'm right in saying that you don't get all the nasty little critters that they do on the mainland. I suppose the fact that it's a little bit cooler helps. That's the good thing about the United Kingdom, we haven't really got anything horrible here, apart from a few people that I won't mention. One poisonous snake and that's all.

My cousin used to live in Tasmania a few years ago. I think he had a work permit for a couple of years and did some work on a crab fishing boat.

I don't want to make you jealous but the weather in Brixham today is absolutely gorgeous. I went down down this afternoon to buy a memory card for my new digital camera and it was so warm. I absolutely adore the summer and hate the winter

Yeah, sorry bout the reminder. Don't mention snakes!!! We've got the several most poisoness in Australia. Damn snakes. We've had bush fires just behind out place more recently, so I'm waiting for more snakes to invaid our yards. Because we've got two dogs and a cat, we've got to be so cautious.
And YES, I am very jealous. This morning, it poured like no bodies business!!! And the sky was so black at 11am, you could have sworn it was 10 at night.
Now, it's 1 in the afternoon, there's a little sun, enough to semi dry the clothes I have on the line, but not enough to enjoy. At least it would have slowed some of the bush fires we have going. It sucks, it may be cold, but when little shits light fires on purpose, they burn. And cost so many firefighters their time and effort away from their family!! Little bastards. Our street was nearly burned away because of kids that have nothing to do. I was up on our roof with a hose that had not much water pressure, our fern tree out the front caught on fire and the possums living in ir were all hanging out on the outer limbs. The fire was luckily pushed back two meters from our fence line, but there was so much damage. Our street was lucky, no ones house got burned because the fieries got there quick.

I don't mind the winter, as long as I've got enough dvds.!!! hahaha.
