Elsabe created the topic: Shiny Baby Blue Oscars

Two of my 6 very small baby Oscars are a shiny, baby blue colour - am I just lucky to have found a striking colour like that or are they going to change as they grow bigger?

Could you possibly post some photographs?

Oscars will change colour as they get older. You only have to look at baby/juvenile Tiger Oscars to see the drastic change in colour as they approach adulthood

In a few months time, Ken will be able to post some photos of his Oscars and you'll see what I'm talking about

Thank you for your reply - I'll post some photo's hopefully tomorrow (don't know the time difference between us). I've got 2 baby tigers as well - with their beautiful colours and spots. I'll keep an eye on their development and keep you posted.

I am in the United Kingdom. If you are on the east coast of the States, I think you are around five hours behind us. Or maybe you are in South Africa, can't quite remember. South Africa believe it or not is I think one hour in front or behind, can't remember

Yes, I did see your photos in the gallery, the Oscars are beautiful. However, the last photo Is so small, you can't really say anything. You might want to consider changing that one. I can do it if you want. You have to send a photo via e-mail

Some Oscars are being "artificially colored" by a small percentage of breeders. Those are usually vibrant colors and will wear off to a rather dull fish before adulthood. I can't say about your Blues though although I can say enjoy it now because most assuredly the coloring will change. I'm betting they change to more of a green tone and I have seen pastel greens very similar to your blues there. The Green ones I've seen are not the normal medium / dark green but a green that is like mint green, like a pack of Wrigley's doublemint gum. I noticed the other Tiger Oscar in your photo too and that one seems to have a generous color for the fishes young age. It could be a breeder fooling around with color enhancers but in any case, lovely fish. Good luck with them and keep us posted as they change color over time.

Need to give away one healthy 1 year old Oscar if you know of anyone interested. See the adoption thread for photos. Thanks!

They call them painted or dyed Oscars. It's a horrible despicable practice that should be stopped. In many cases, the membrane is burnt away with acid and then it is dipped in dye. Very often when you see very highly coloured Oscars, you are looking at dyed Oscars. There are some that are bred that way but many have been dyed. Horrible horrible horrible

I have e-mailed you the big photo from which I've cropped the 2 blue Oscars. Please change it to whatever size you seem fit.
