I’ve had my Oscar for a couple of weeks now. He’s about 3 ½ inches long. I was wondering when a good time would be to start feeding him little fish as a treat. I’m feeding him pellets, and I’ve feed him 1 worm so far from the garden, also what all kinds of fish will work as a good treat, ( minnows, gold fish…?)

Keep in mind; I have a 55 (US) gallon tank that is “UN-CYCLED”. I’m doing water changes twice a day. I’m keeping a real close eye on the ammonia levels; they stay right around 0 because of the water changes… I’m getting a bigger tank this weekend, (either 75 or 125 (US) gallons, haven’t decided yet) I going to get it, get it set up, and get it cycled, then put my Oscar in it, and cycle the 55 gallon tank, so I can keep the bait in it..

Feeding live fish is quite a contentious issue. Unless you breed them yourself, it really isn't recommended. Fish that you get from your local fish shop could contain diseases and parasites. It's up to you whether you take the risk or not but I wouldn't advise it unless of course you raise them yourself like I have already mentioned. If you really wanted to buy fish for your Oscar, I would recommend quarantining them for a while before feeding them. This of course wouldn't guarantee that they haven't got anything nasty.

Oscars will eat live food from very young age so your fish at the moment would make short work of a little fish. Once they get hold of something, they don't let go.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Ahh, very good point!! I’ve got enough problems with the un-cycled tank issues, so I think for the time being.. I’ll just stick with the pellets, and give a worm every now and then  Thanks!!
