Joliet Jake created the topic: Jake went missing!

This afternoon I did a good water change after which both Jake and Elvira were both rubbing a clean spot on the aquarim bottom, as they normally might do after a fresh water change.

30 minutes ago, I came up to my room to check on them and for the life of me could only find one Oscar. I was able to determine that the one I had was Elvira and Jake was gone. I checked everywhere and even called my wife up to double check my search. We both looked for about 10-15 minutes and Jake was not in the tank and I was worried. Yet, he couldn't jump out either and I even dismantled and inspected the hood too, just to be sure he wasn't stuck somewhere. He wasn't in any of the caves and he seemed to have just vanished. I took the center ornament which was a large tree stump and shook it and even turned it upside down. No Jake! So, I finally decided to pick it out of the water because I knew there was a hole in the bottom of about 2-1/2". I had it outside the water, upside down and was almost done draining it out when all of a sudden he went nuts inside, flailing away and popped out into the water again. He darn near scared the life outa' me.

He's got a few tears in his tail fin but other then that doesn't seem too bad now. I plugged the hole up with a small plastic plant from underneath so he can't manage his way in there again.
I don't think he was capable of getting out on his own because I do have plastic plants jammed in there from the top too and I do think he was trapped. The whole time Elvira seemed to be sulking, half laying over and just laying low herself. Now they are both hiding in one clay cave together and I think the episode scared the heck out of Jake too who is normally the braver of the two..

Oscars are inquisitive creatures, I think you'll find they will investigate anything in the tank. Jake probably wondered what was in there and then realised he couldn't get back out again. A friend of mine had a couple of Clown Loach. One of them went missing and she couldn't find it anywhere. She took all the ornaments out and still couldn't find it. It turned out that one of them had swum into one of the ornaments. Even though she took it out, it was still in there. I have got exactly the same thing with my two small Clown Loach. I have got a fake piece of wood that has got holes in it. The ClownLoach live in there. Sometimes the water drops below where they actually go, I can't believe I haven't died yet. They must be all right because I been doing it for months

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Oooh, I hate those types of things!!! I had the biggest scare the other night. It was early morning, 2.30ish, very dark and I needed to get up for a drink. As I turned the bedside lamp on, for some reason I scared the sheister out of Oshie, he went nuts in the tank for a second, then ......I forgot to move the lid back over fully after feeding and he managed to jump right out of the water, and out of the tank!!!! I felt all the blood drain from me, my heart stopped, I couldn't catch him, but picked him up after he stabbed my hand and placed him back in!!! I was so worried, I was awake all night, and I had to be somewhere until lunch time that day! I panicked so much while I was gone. As soon as I got home, I dropped everything and ran to see how he was. He was alright. Still not very happy, but two days later he's better than ever! Oh I'm sooo relieved! I was nearly in tears when I was gone over the next couple of days worrying. But he has no cuts, or rips in his fins. DAMN PETS!!! Now we're going to have to put down our old dog in the next week I think. She has an infection in her gums and nose, which smells to high heaven, and is making her cough. We can't get it opperated on because she's too old, so I want to do this before she gets too bad! I'm surprised that I'm ok so far, I know I'll break so bad when she does go, but it has to happen. I'll let everyone know how Oshie's going, and I'll let you know what happens with my Tammi (my big oompa loompa in the photo of me in the members photos). Wish me luck and strength.

Jake is on the mend. In fact, the only sign now is a small one or two splits in his tail fin and those seem to be on the mend already too. I just can't get over "how close" these two fish are. I mean they are touching each other continually, sit next to each other, swim side by side and generally are truely inseperable. They say you can't be 100% sure of a mated pair until they lay and fertilize eggs, but I am really confident this is a mated pair. I fear I will have Oscar fry to deal with before years end.

I'll parlay that into a new tank though because at that point I'll just present it as a requirement, not just a request. Right now this 75 is ample for the 2 of them but later on I hope to get them into a 125 at which time I will have the 75 for the fry. I didn't bargain on buying a mated pair and quite honestly did the "impulse buy" when I did take these two home. (Just like most everyone else). If I have fry, I am confident I can move them along to local pet shops and we do have a "better" fish store that generally has a tad higher prices but "cared for" healthy fish. That is about 30-35 minutes from home but a candidate to take the fry at a salable age.

Yesterday I raised the temperature in their tank from 77 closer to 79-80 now and they seem to enjoy that more and are being more active. I still have 3-4 zebra danios in the tank and the Oscars are not as eager to chase them as they once were, I think because they are learning that it's almost futile. (for now anyway).
Much like my German Shepherd who used to chase deer all the time, now just barks at them instead...:side:
