I am not specifically familiar with them but can say this. There are many different brands and meds on the market for fish diseases and parasites and all work pretty much as advertised. They key is to First, correct the environment that caused the problem in the first place, and use a medication suitable for the problem as necessary. Especially with Oscars, good quality water goes a long way towards healing and we recommend frequent water changes when trying to get an Oscar to heal up. Often, water quality alone is enough to heal simple bumps, bruises and abbrasions that Oscars seem to get throughout their lives. In your Fishes case, he needs lots of TLC in combiunation with Meds and good water quality. (He looks lucky to even be alive.) Do a good 40-50% water change before beginning the medication in my opinion to remove some of that salt and to get that water changed out anyway.

Here'a a good website that you can use as a reference for many available medications:

I know a big picture is frowned upon but did it not show what was wrong will his oscar better than a smaller picture. I personally think that when someone has a problem with their fish a big picture is to be encouraged. What do you think oscarfishlover and jake?

Best of luck with the oscar newoscar and keep doing those water changes

I fully agree and I took Penn's comment strictly as a joke which I am sure he intended it to be. :silly:

Hi. I started the Pimafix Friday and added the Melafix Sat.. I have done water changes every other day. I was away for 1 day (but the medicine was continued) and tonight the Oscar looks worse. There is now a white stringy matter on both front fins. Do you think it will be ok to switch to the Maracyn and Maracyn II tomorrow?

If you knew me personally, you would know that I am a sarcastic bugger sometimes. It was meant as a joke and nothing more. Believe me, you will know if I am not happy

I agree about the photos, sometimes a very large photo is necessary. It's just a pain when you have to scroll across the page to read what people have written.

If a big photo is necessary, please post it

Do a good water change, maybe 50% and then do switch over to Meds. Pimafix and Malafix are both "natural" remedies and do work nicely in my opinion but it appears your fish is more severe and needs something tougher to treat him.

I switched to meds yesterday. Maracyn, Maracyn II, and Maroxy. Maroxy for fungal infection and Maracyn and Maqracyn II for the secondary bacterial infection. Now there is a white stringy substance building up on the plant. Is this because I took out the carbon filter cartridge or is something really taking over the aquarium. I did a 50% water change before adding the meds. The fish does not look any worse and maybe a little better- he has more life today. What do you think this white stuff is? (he had a little on his fins before I started the meds- it seems to be almost gone on him but all over the plant and filter) Should I put the filter cartridge back in? Or put in a new one?

Firstly, if you left the carbon in, it would just remove the medication as you put it in, so your fish wouldn't benefit. My advice would be to not put the carbon in at all, you do not need it. When the medication is finished, do a large water change.

Regarding the white stringy stuff on the plants, can't think of anything at the moment, post a photograph if possible. All I will say is that if it's not on your fish, don't worry too much. It's when you get a horrible things attached to your fish, that's when you may have problems.

After 7 days of Maracyn and Maracyn II (and 3 days of Maroxy) The Oscar looks only slightly better at best. The white patches may be thinner (occasionally I think I see pink flesh underneath but hard to say) but it seems to be more widespread. One person suggested I treat for parasites when I complete antibiotics. Should I buy more antibiotics and treat longer or stop now and use something like malachite green and formalin which is available at Petsmart?
