misplacedsooner created the topic: guppies okay?

I work at a school k-5 and they get guppies in so the kids can watch them breed and learn, a science project I guess. when they get done with them they put them in tanks that some of the people there have in classrooms and they just go to town. so basicly I have a breeding factory where I work and dont have to bother at home and I can have what I want of them. I have large ca s and a pair of gt s and once in awhile I bring them a treat but not often, I assume they are okay for my oscar too? does he need more than my other fish? I generally just put in 2-4 and whoever gets lucky enough to get them gets the treat. I only do this about once a month. is this okay for oscar?

How big is your Oscar? Adult Oscars don't actually need to eat a lot. I wouldn't feed and adult Oscar every day, I would do it every other day. As for guppies, depends how big they are. I have never fed live fish to my Oscars but if you are feeding adult guppies, I would imagine that two or three would be adequate. However, I would only do this as a treat, I would definitely feed pellets as their main diet.

the oscar in question is the one I took on sunday, he is 10 in. pellets are the main staple, he seems to like those alot. I put in 2 guppies last night and he hasnt bothered them. I only live feed my synspilus and gt s about once every mo. or two.

A lot of people think that Oscars are nothing but carnivorous killers. That is probably further from the truth. In the wild, Oscars will probably feed mainly on insects that fall into the water. They probably wait for the food to come to them, you can see by their body that they are not made for speed and stealth, more short lunges, and taking things by surprise. You can see that they are used to looking up and taking food of the surface, they have the sort of eyes that are made for looking everywhere, especially up. They will probably do this a lot in the wild. If you are familiar with carp, they are exactly like them. They will feed off the surface, mid water and off the bottom. If you take other fish like catfish and loaches, they are made for feeding off the bottom and very rarely come to the surface for food.

So, Oscar won't necessarily gobble up every little fish that enters its environment. Some people keep Oscars and tiny fish together for years.

Guppies make good feeder fish for your Oscar. Just make sure they're not store bought and are healthy. I'd even recommend you quarantine them for a few days to a week one bringing them home from school.
The Oscar will love them!

Need to give away one healthy 1 year old Oscar if you know of anyone interested. See the adoption thread for photos. Thanks!

yeah, they are in tanks at the school and since Ive been there I maintain them all. I just suggest what I would like them to buy and they buy it. wish they would do that with my home tanksB). I did score a 29 gal. with double stand and a 26.96 gal pentagon tank with stand last weekend for free from them, their way of saing thanks I suppose. thats why I was so freaked out about getting that nasty 55 with oscar plus some, I had tanks all over my living room and supplies waiting to get set up.
