I'm not sure I understand your question. Do you mean that when they start their courtship for the very first time? Or are you talking about a mature pair? If you are talking about the former then it could be many months before eggs come along. Oscars will start acting strangely with each other before they one year old. If you are talking about a mature pair of Oscars them it is a very difficult question to answer. In fact, I couldn't answer the question. I don't think there's any given time from when they go through some kind of courtship to when they lay eggs. They will jaw lock, chase each other etc at any time, not necessarily three days before laying eggs.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

You can breed different types of oscars, Each offspring will be a colour combination of the 2. Its a bit like breeding dogs or cats of different colour. The litter will be a mix of the parents

That is so cool. I would love to have a pair of red oscars, cause I love their red colour, the brighter the beter

In "Male or Female Oscar Fish?", I read "Oscars and many other fish in general will come into spawn once a month." Are you guys for real?? If each time the pair spanws 200 eggs and if I successfully get 100 frys, I can produce 1200 frys a year. WOW, that is a lot of fish.

I bred convicts once. I had 2 smallish convicts(about 1.5 inches- full size they are 6 inches) and got 70(after some deaths) babies that got to about an inch in size. In the time it took the babys to get about an inch the parents laid eggs another 5 or 6 times- i use to rub them off). They laid eggs about every 2 weeks. I am guessing oscars will breed with roughly similar fequency. The convict babies grew at different rates and as they got to about an inch I took them to a local fish shop that swapped them for something else (you dont get much for them- fish shop mark ups are very very large). Some shops wont even give you credit!!!! Imagine full size convicts breeding without a shop to take the babies to

Full size oscars are bigger and have about 3000 eggs each time so think very carefully about breeding them

Hi Guys,

Thanks for you input. Hmmm.....I was told buy a fish wholesaler, I could sell the frys to them for 10 cents each @ 2" long. I would have to sell quiet a few frys in order to give up my day job. he he

Next question, how do I breed a new colour? I want to breed a bright fire engine red oscar. Does that mean I breed two red oscars and they will give me very red frys?

you will have to keep useing the brightest from each batch and let genetics do its thing, breeding new colours is a long slow process.

From my limited understanding breeding a new colour of oscars takes a long time and a lot of effort. If it was easy there would be a lot more different colours of oscars available today. To be able to do it you would practically have to be an oscar wholesaler
