lfs shop asistants needs to be substaintually more knowledgeable in regards to fish as far as im concerned.

Not gonna happen, IMO. Not in the big chains. You get the knowledge you pay for and if you're gonna pay them like grocery store clerks...they'll BE grocery store clerks. It is what it is. If you gotta buy food other than pellets at the chain pet stores frozen would be as much as I'd do nowadays. I have a 20 gallon for raising my few feeder minnows...and I'll buy giant mealworms, brine shrimp, and bloodworm at the store. That's it. Maybe a shrimp or two....but I like the bamboo who are sold as pets because any 'feeder' connotation' means we don't really give two shits about how they're raised.

Thing is though...I can't bitch too much because the two O's I have that are growing and healthy and doing well (as well as the Plec) are from the same pet store I'm bitching about...so they can't be all bad. I just do not trust feeders looking at the conditions in which they are stored. There's one guy who I can tell really is a fish lover...and he helps me out alot. Other than that I go to the cichlid store.

lol i had to be rude the other day at walmart while i was standing at the live fish counter waiting on the clerk to help some people getting an oscar so i could get some live ghost shrimp for my puffers, i saw a nice tiger oscar go in teh bag, then an lutino go in teh bag, then a common plec, and 2 pacu's... i go "WOW HOLY HELL YOU MUST HAVE A ATLEAST A 300 GALLON TANK FOR ALL THOSE FISH" lady turns to me, giggles, and says "nope just a 40" and before i get a chance to remark the clerk says "yeah well a 20 should be fine for a year or two so you should be good to go" and i kinda lost my cool and started ranting at the clerk about not knowing a hole in the wall from a stick in his ass ect... lol... when it was all said and done the lady was like hmmm and actually told the clerk "shut up a minute please" while i was telling this lady about oscars and what they needed. before it was all done the pacu's and the albino O went back into the display tank. that right there... that felt like a small victory for me. lol at this point the clerk was pretty agitated lol... hes like now what do you want? "in that tone of voice" and im like "all your fuckin ghost shrimp" (i do this every time i buy ghost shrimps LOL) "okay sir how many?" and i say the same thing every time... "what part of ALL dont you understand?" and now hes pissed off and off he runs to get the manager. i swear thats better than the fat guy that tried to bow up when i was buying shrimp LOL... dude now is a cart pusher LOL :D :D :D fuckin love walmart... just dont expect any help at all from their staff in aquatic pets.

i can post both. they are in 1.022SG seawater, accilmated from 100% freshwater when i bought them at walmart. keep them at 80 degrees, feed when small, sun dried gammarus shrimps, when bigger, dried krill. occasionally i give them a treat of cleaned scallops or squid if i can find it. neat fish, you can keep them in 100% freshwater, brackish water, or 100% seawater, you just give them the time to slowly acclimate to it and they do just fine. i rather like them, they remind me of helicopters the way they move around in any direction regardless of which way they are actually orientated.

eyes bigger than his belly

only thing is... if an oscar bites you... theres a scrape on the skin... if one of these bite you... there is a plug of meat missing. that beak of their is like a razor blade lol. ouch.

RIFF-RAFF replied the topic: Re: What to feed oscar??? All your questions answered!

I'm hoping someone here can help me. I currently have an 8/9" oscar of about 1 year. She's looking very healthy but i think shes getting very bored of her diet and won't eat half of it now. Her (Lava, thaught it she was male until recently) diet currently consists of large Hikari gold pellets (main diet) which she still loves but i always try to feed her one frozen meal a day. Used to be bloodworm but she sees that as to small now so went onto frozen krill. That's fine up to a fashion but being designed for marine tanks the salt problem is a nightmare and the ammonia it produces is even worse still.
I'm currently trying her out on a bit of cow heart that I've prepared and taken all fat off for her and a bit of apple.
I'm hoping though that someone here will be able to give me an idea of a reasonably cheap alternative that won't cause so many tank problems and is pretty idiot proof for mum and partner when I'm fishing or away(They don't mind looking after her as long as its simple).

Unfortunately shes in a small tank for an oscar at the moment of 38 uk gallons while I'm having a bigger tank repaired(Cracked base). With only a 1200Ltr an hour external filter canister filter to clean the tank running alongside an under gravel filter so cleaner food rather than a messy food(thats laughable with an oscar) is paramount.

I won't feed live food as shes in a community tank and always has been so its unfair to remove her on her own now and i don't really want to lose the rest. I know I'm also overcrowded as i took on the local fish shops castaways a few months back including 2 18" plecs(also making a hell of a mess). Anyone got any ideas?

Please don't just say i need that bigger tank thats going to take a couple of months yet as i need to build a concrete base for it as well (13 foot long by 4 foot wide and 4 foot high). Can't build that until i get the tank back though unfortunately (delivery guys dropped it).

Also has anyone got any ideas of how i could possibly keep the tank clean all the time? I'm currently having to change the filter sponges weekly and water changes daily plus gravel cleans. I'm sure this cannot be good for the fish or my hands (Lava bites while doing maintenance) even if they are looking healthy.
