martin1967 created the topic: Sick Fish, Help Required

Hi, I have a sick fish, its got pop-eye and is hardly eating. Partial water changes, daily water testing and treating with melafix have all failed. Its very inactive and I am desperately in need in need of advice on what to do next. I am in the UK so any advice on alternative treatments should be available in the UK if possible. Thank you in advance for any responses, Martin.

There is a thread somewhere on here where someone's Oscar had Popeye and the fish is much better. I think you should try Myxazin and see how you get on. Keep up with the will to changes. Remove any carbon from your filtration as well. Make sure you feed good quality food.

Thank you for your help, I have the Myxazin now but before I use it, is their any benefit in using it in conjunction with Melafix or should the two not be used simultaneously?

It doesn't say anywhere in the instructions about using myxazin in conjunction with Melafix, Pimafix yes, but not Myxazin. Thankfully, I haven't had to use these medications at all in the years I have been keeping fish. Try the Myxazin first and see what happens.

Hi, thanks for the advice, unfortunately my oscar died. I have an albino tiger oscar that is doing fine though. This episode has knocked my confidence somewhat and I'm wondering whether I should try to put it behind me or whether to try and rehome the albino.
I was so sure I was doing everything right but would hate to be in this position again.
We have over 50 animals ranging from mammals, reptiles, amphibians, tropical and pond fish and have never had an animal die on me before that left me with a feeling of 'I must have been able to do something better, or I should have done something different'.
Anyway thanks for the help, i wish I had found this forum earlier.

Hey man, sorry to hear about your fish, it sucks when they die, unfortunately that is something that is inevitable when keeping any pet. Don't let it put you off, use it as an experience and learn from it. I have lost three Oscars in the years I have been keeping them. Most of the time I just don't know why it has happened, I've done nothing wrong, it's just life. This is the problem with keeping fish, they are not like dogs and cats, it's very difficult to take them to the vet. A lot of the time when they become ill, it's extremely difficult to diagnose the problem. We can only do our best, keep the water in good condition, feed them on good quality food and give them a good environment to live in.

I hope you persevere with the fish and stick around
