martin1967 created the topic: Earthworms

I have read in one book and seen in an article on the web that earthworms are a good supplement to pellets and red mosquito larvae. Is this true? I have a lot of garden and I'm sure my chickens and ducks wouldn't mind me nicking a few of theirs to wash, chop up and put in for my oscars. I would like some confirmation from the knowledgeable members here. Also thanks to the host for this wonderfully informative and helpful site, I am reading so many of the great pages of advice and info here.

Oscars absolutely love worms, any worms come to think of it. There is loads of goodness in them.

Oscars cant get enough of earthworms. They love them. I have mentioned a couple of times before about how to get them but here goes again. Wait for a rainy day and/or preferably raining evening. Go out after dark with a bucket and torch. The worms will be laying out on the ground. Slowly sneak up on them and grab them. They will try to get back in the ground. If you pull too hard you will snap them in two. Just hold them till they run out of puff and slip out of the ground. You will get the hang of it soon enough. If you get enough for more than one meal then just store them in a box with a lid with wet newspaper inside it

When you feed them to oscars you just wash them and chuck them in whole. This will cause the mud in the worms to go into your tank. If you dont like this the top and tail the worm and squeeze along its length to remove the mud.

Happy hunting

Oscarfishlover, how about setting up a 'helpful article' about catching worms as this question seems to come up regularly! I am willing to help on this if you need it

By all means do something for the members article on harvesting worms. I think people would be very interested. Many people don't actually know how to catch worms successfully, especially the big juicy ones. You don't necessarily have to go digging.

We have a compost up the back of our place. whenever I need worms, I just either lift up the first layer, and there's masses there, or squirt the pile until they come to the surface. They need a little clean up, but my golly gosh Oshie loves them when meal time comes around!!!
