AZ Steve created the topic: Is my O Lutino or Albino?

Ok so I was reading up on something I read on a past post. It would seem that my lfs also mislabeled Sarge(my O) as albino. What Ive read says he is called a lutino, and it makes sence any other "Albino" creature I have seen be it a snake or skunk or what ever has been all white with pinkish eyes.So I guess my question is, is lutino the correct term or just something people started calling them? This is a pic of Sarge..

From what I have been able to gather a true Albino will have no gray coloring on his fins and will have red eyes. Rocksor mentioned that it could be up to a year before you can tell 100% what they are. I also read that the chances of getting a true Albino are slim , unless its a very reputable breeder. They may call them Albinos , but its usually Lutinos that are sold in most petstores.

I have a baby one in my tank as well , so I am in the same boat as you. I am curious about what she is as well , but I guess only time will tell. The important thing is that shes mine ! :)

I moved the thread to the correct section.

Firestorm is correct.
An albino will have no pigmentation at all, which will result in a completely white fish with no colourations or markings at all.
The result of this lack of pigmentation are the red eyes too.
Here's an example of true albinism in an oscar, made by Aquamojo, one of our members...

Rocksor could be right, about the fact, that you can tell if an Oscar is an albino only at a later age.
But with a specimen like this baby, chances are bigger , that it will turn out to be an albino, then with an Oscar , that has markings or different coloured eyes from birth:

So if there's any colour, it rules out , that a fish is an albino.
Your fish is what we call a Lutino indeed.

I noticed that with Lily. She was sold as an Albino. And when I first bought her she was white , almost a silvery color. Nothing else. Now I am starting to see orange markings come in.

Right, Oscars can change their appearance quite drastically over time. :P
