I have a mate who went to the pet store and saw a tiny oscar that he fell in love with. He has a rather large tank of guppies, I don't know the size, but by the looks of it I would say too small for an adult oscar. Anyway, he took the oscar home and said he will put it in with the guppies and doesn't mind the oscar eating them.

I don't like this idea at all so thought I would ask the experts here. What is going to happen? Will this end with a dead oscar?

I assume the oscar will eat all the guppy fry and the adults will be too large for him to eat at the moment. Will the oscar gorge himself on guppy and die, or will he slowly eat his way through all the guppies as he grows and face nutritional issues? From memory the tank is not planted and has no place for the guppy to hide so I figure they would be eaten out pretty fast.

Assuming that the water parameters are ok, is there any way this can end well? By "end well" I mean the oscar can survive until my mate figures out he needs a larger tank and upgrades.

The oscar will likely be fat and happy for a little while and then in a short period of time be too big for the tank. sadly this is how it turns out for many oscars.

It's not likely to end well. Regarding the guppies getting eaten, that depends on the size and temperament of the oscar. Many times people have to learn the hard way that large fish like oscars need at least a 55 - 75 gal tank min.

The oscars at the pet store are about 2 inches long, I assume the one in questions is much the same size. I have never seen oscars at the pet store before, I can't imagine they were locally bred as people out here are not too fond of fish. The lady working there was explaining to someone that they get on well with other fish as they don't grow too fast and just to feed them goldfish flakes. I am tempted to buy one to get them out of those conditions but don't have a large enough tank spare.

I know that oscars will eat small amounts of guppy in the wild. Would a diet of primarily guppies kill the oscar or would it just cause serious problems (health problems, aggressive temperament, refusal to eat other foods etc) as it grows?

On a related note, is it possible to house an oscar in an unheated outdoor pond over the warmer months and then move it into the house during the cooler months?

The only place I know where oscars live outside is in south Florida. I'm not sure about outdoor ponds in the warmer months though.

Most members here won't feed live fish to their oscars because of the risk of disease spreading. Over time, the chance they will get sick and possibly even die is high if fed feeder fish.

They can live in an unheated pond that doesnt dip in temperature too rapidly and stays above 73f.

I was going to say, I've seen them live in unheated ponds year round! But...I'm from South Florida so that doesn't help much :-)

So the madness has stopped, at least for now. My mate decided that he could not keep his baby oscar in with his guppies as his tank was too small etc and I have since 'rescued' the oscar. All the other oscars from the pet store are gone, either died or sold.

I am a bit concerned about this fish, I may make a new post and ask for help.
