OscarSwish96 created the topic: Fins

Hey guys :) just wondering how many people have Oscars that have a long skinny bit on the ends of their bottom fins. Every Oscar I've seen in person doesn't have it except mine, so I was wondering how many have it and why. Im on my phone so I cant post a picture so you can see what i mean :/

Thanks :)

Some are longer than others. Just depends on the Oscar. I personally like the longer extensions. If you get the Tapatalk app for your phone you can add pics directly form your phone to the forum. You should be able to add them using photobucket from your phone as well. I have many times in the past.

Do you mean the pelvic fins or anal fin?

Normal either way, don't worry. My O (Henry) has big fins too. Cute little guy though!

The two middle ones. I call them pointless fins because they just sort of dangle there xD

Ah, they're the pelvic fins. They use them as little rudders to control their direction while swimming, so not useless at all! ;)

They correspond to a land vertebrate's hind limbs.

Bigger Oscars seem to use them more if you compare the way they use them while swimming. My Oscar is about 7" and he doesn't seem to move them much, while my friends Oscar is 12"+ and they certainly don't seem pointless on him :) that Oscar also doesn't have the longer fins either

I think it depends on the oscar. Henry's about 8" and he uses his all the time. Has the longer fins too (though not quite the same extent).

7 inches? I would have guessed just a few inches based on the shape of the body. Looks like he's going to be a big one. How old is he? Mine is only a couple inches bigger but has a rounder body type. He's about 18 months.

He was 6" a few months ago (I measured whenever he hovered over my 6" air stone) :) I bought mine when he was 1.5 inches in April, so I'd say he's about a year old now.
