Oscar2015 created the topic: Oscar qustion

Hi there
I am new here and to the Oscar world
I bought a albino tiger oscar on 1/10/15
I named him Olaf from the movie Frozen
well he has not destroyed anything in my tank
oh and he's in a 30G tank with 4 other Jack Dempsey's
yes I know he needs a bigger tank and I have plans on moving him and the JD's to a 55 Gallion
my question is
why does he not act like all the other Oscars I hear about
he doesn't attack food or try to jump at the food
he just swims around and hangs out at the bottom of the tank
is it because he's new or is something wrong with him???
he seems happy and healthy

I feed him and his tank mates

Tetra Cichlid flakes
Cichlid Gold color enhancing medium pellets ( for when they get bigger )
Cichlid staple a Growth diet small pellets

all I seen him eat was the flakes
Please help me if you guys can

Thank you
Jenn

Hi Jenn welcome :) i know nothing compared to the good folks on this forum but the first thing there going to tell you is your tank size even 55g is only barely the minimum for 1 oscar alone let alone all your JDs. Maybe when you rehome everything you will see a change in your O's behaviour in your 55g of course :)

At this point his behavior is likely caused by the stress of the move. However, if it does improve it will not last long ... in that 30 gallon tank or a 55 gallon.

You've been misinformed regarding the tank size needed for these fish. A single oscar needs a 55 gallon tank ... and that's considered absolute minimum. 75 gallons is a more appropriate minimum size for a single oscar.

The JDs also need 55 gallon tanks each.

There is a lot of misinformation out there, especially at large pet stores. Maybe this is where you were told this setup would be ok.

You should return the JDs and put the oscar in a 55 gallon or return all the fish until you can get a 55 gallon.

You could put small fish like tetras in a 30 gallon.

Hi Jen welcome to ofl. Love how you name him olaf my daughter will love it. But your Oscar is definitely stressed out. With the small swim space and 5other roommates it's a bit small. I would hi with what unc suggested and rehome the Jack's or Oscar till you have a bigger tank setup first.

Welcome to OFL
It sucks to hear, I experienced it myself. I was told my 46 gallon would be fine for my Oscar for about a year, clearly it wasn't and as soon as I could I upgraded to a 100 and since then the difference in him is crazy. He is very active and he begs for food. I even taught him to spin for food. I even noticed yesterday that I could probably touch him he is the comfortable around me now that he has is nice big tank to himself. If your Oscar gets in a tank that suits him I would say you will have a normal behaving Oscar. I don't have a whole pile of experience but I figure I can relate to you because the same thing happened to me.
I also have seen jack dempseys in a tank to small and what happened was soon as it hit a certain size he went crazy and his agression got to bad towards other fish. From what I understand that is very common with them so keep an eye out for that, you wouldn't want them to harm your Oscar or each other.

Get a much bigger tank for all 5, like a 200+ tank (stock for adult size fish). You need to cycle your tank first, and do not cycle with the oscar. Do a fishless cycle and get an API freshwater master test kit, plus a Python No Spill water changer. You will need it for keeping big cichlids.

My gut reaction when I first see a post like this is... Troll.

But sadly these situations are so common. Some stores dont ask any questions and just sell fish.

Thanks guys for your replies
I have moved the JD's to the 55 Gallon with my African Cichlids that I have in there
so the Oscar ( Olaf ) is in his own 30G tank he seems much happier then before and is swimming around
he's still a baby so I am guessing the 30G will be fine for the moment
when he gets bigger I am going to move the African Cichlids to another tank and have the Oscar and JD's in the 55 if that would work??
if not I will try to sell the JD's when the time comes

Thanks
Jenn
