Lammergeier created the topic: The 5% You Can't Control (Henry did Something Really Stupid)

One thing that's always stuck with me on these forums is what Dave (Suprd) said a while ago when I was flipping s*** about Henry getting into trouble. The gist was that if you give your O's good food, enough space, proper filtration and regular water changes 95% of what keeps an oscar alive and healthy is completely taken care of, and the 5% remaining are generally things out of your control. This is one of those 5% things.

So today I did a w/c for Henry and Adie. When I just need to do a water change without poop scooping, I just clamp a hose to the tank - it's what I used to use before getting the python. It's cut to size for their tank so it saves the effort of having to tinker with the python to get the right hose length because that's set for the fish in the other room at the moment. Anyway, when filling I just stick the hose to the side of the tank using a spare suction cup, and with a magnetic scrubber underneath the water flow so sand doesn't get blown around.

When the tank was 3/4 full I heard a splash so went to check on them. Nothing but innocent googly eyes. When there was only 30 - 40L to go I heard another splash and went to the tank again. The hose was blowing sand around everywhere and the suction cup was gone, AND Adie and Henry were bolting to the other side of the tank. "Oh s***" I thought.

So cue 45 minutes of me dismantling all the deco, sifting through the sand and panicking trying to find this god damned stupid suction cup. I ended up giving Henry a pellet just so I could look in his mouth, nothing, but he was acting antsier than usual. Not good.

Luckily this has a happy ending. After about an hour of panicking I finally found the damn thing. No pieces missing off it but the rim looks like a toddler has been gumming at it. The idiots knocked it off the side (no idea how, it's fairly new and stuck well), then with great purpose dragged it 6 feet away to the other side of the tank then half buried it in sand underneath the heater. Did I mention this particular suction cup was clear?

Henry hasn't done anything this stupid since he snatched a test tube out of my hand when I was going to test their water and bolted away with the whole test tube sticking out of his mouth. I use a syringe to get water now. Then there was the time he thought it'd be a great idea to try and eat a strand of my hair which resulted in him getting netted and hair carefully extracted from his gaping maw of a mouth, and now this.

:pinch:

I have more stories about my other fish, but anyone else have any stupid near misses?

Oh god dude, I'd have been freaking out! I'm glad my yoyo's have smaller mouths right now! /hugs All they can do is nibble on plastic plants, and make the thermometer sit at an angle. I'm in for it when I get my oscar, aren't I?

I had a guppy that kept escaping the fry trap she was in, in the fry tank, as she was getting close to giving birth. Eventually, the top was altered so there was a small opening... which she managed to jump out of. She also managed to jump out of the tank, through a small crack in the glass pieces on top, and ended up behind the tank, on the floor. We think she used the light as a stepping stone over.

She was very lucky, as Tera came in, saw the trap was empty, and looked around. She was nearly dry on the floor, and he put her back in, hoping for the best- she had streaks of orange on her that didn't look good. No babies from that, but she recovered, with an orange streak in her tail as a reminder to us about guppies and small openings. I haven't tried to move her out since.

Lol man I remember the first time Sarge broke his thermometer. I spent hrs sifting through sand..changing water because I was afraid some of the liquid might have got in the water...not to mention the days of poo patrol looking for bits of glass lol

If you guys are interested in another story, this one's about Ganbie (juvie Umbee cichlid).

I used to keep the inlet and outlet of the FX5 covered with nylon stockings because he was so tiny (he was literally small enough to go into the inlet if he was facing it when I got him). My friends mocked me for being paranoid...

The day we took the stocking off the outlet was a day we did a w/c so I turned off the Fx5 (water goes below the inlet when the tank's drained). All was well, filled up the tank, no problems... Until Ganbie saw he could access the outlet.

The genius swam up to it with his 'omg is that food?' face, then before we could react proceeded to shove his face as far into the outlet as it would go. He blocked one side of the outlet for about 5 seconds and then got blasted out :pinch: He was disoriented for a few seconds but then just started begging for food. I don't even know.
