@Poseidon: We can't get rotkeils in Aus (well, there are rumours someone in Qld might have snagged a breeding pair... but that's a rumour at best at the moment). We only have gold severums and green severums here to my knowledge. No super-reds either.

Anyway rory, sounds like a good idea to me. Gives FG his/her own tank, and silver dollars/severums are a good mix. My SDs helped my sev really come out of her shell.

With a 150 gal tank you could probably have something else in there too, depending how many sevs you wanted to get. Maybe a pair of severums, a chocolate cichlid and the SDs? Chocolate cichlids are pretty awesome from what I've heard. Even that you could probably add something to as well. 150 gals gives you a lot of choice, especially if you aren't planning stocking around an oscar.

aqadvisor.com/ is pretty cool. I wouldn't trust the numbers blindly but it'll give you an idea. Worth playing around with at any rate.

Oh, one other thing: Rory, be careful where you get your gold sevs from. Because we can't import severums from overseas the golds can be quite prone to health issues down here when young due to all the inbreeding that's gone on. The mortality rate is really high for the juvies, so if you can try and get some that are above 7cm long. Usually, if they're able to survive to that size they don't have any health issues. This might be VIC specific but something to keep in mind.

Would severums be ok with Jds if they grow up together?

Ah. Didn't think the JDs were still happening based on "im going to put Sds and red severums in the 150"

You could try it, but I wouldn't personally be game to. I've never owned a JD myself but it seems that people have mixed experiences with theirs. Some are fine as community fish, others are demons.

Severum's can hold their own against SA cichlids, but even though JDs are more passive than a lot of CA cichlids they still are capable of doing a lot of damage to other fish. I wouldn't want to try severums with anything more aggressive than an oscar.

I'm sure others will have ideas but I really don't know what you could stock with JDs. I'm having a mind blank. Whenever I think about stocking it's either dreaming about a 12ft tank full of viejas or some overly peaceful SA tank :P

I didn't realize (or have forgotten) that roryson was in Australia as I do recall our (or someone's) previous convo about these guys. I thought there was an outstanding question about what a Red shouldered severums and that roryson offered the pic of the red-hued gold one as a response to UNC-CH's suggestion. Ok, that may or may not make any sense, but really I just like posting pictures of rotkeils. :P

Figured as much!

@rory: yeah bioload would be fine, I just wouldn't personally trust JDs not to beat the crap out of severums if they got annoyed. Sevs have a lot of bulk but really can't fight back against a CA cichlid.
