How long since you've performed a water change? A pH of 8.4 is very high for oscars. If you've done a water change in less than 24 hours, the pH may still drop a little. Still, that's high. Oscars do best in soft acidic water. I'd like to know what your GH and KH are. Is this water from a well or the local water company?

You will need a gh/kh test kit to determine if you have hard or soft water. Your local water authority yearly report may provide GH reading. It is not unheard of tap water having a higher ph of 8.0+ and being real soft.

Rocksor - I've tried to find out why some tap water like mine is very soft (GH and KH both around 1-2 degrees hardness) yet has a pH of around 8.6 from the tap and around 8.2 after sitting with an airstone for 24 hours, but haven't been able to understand why. I understand that hard water usually has a high pH and soft water has a low pH. What can cause the opposite condition?

let your tap water sit out in a cup for 1 day and then measure the ph. It will help if you stir the water occasionally.

you have low mineral water, which is why the gh and kh are low, basically your water contains very low or next to no calcium or magnesium. It must be a river similar to the amazon or even more acidic from which your water comes from. The water company adds chemicals to the water to prevent water lines from eroding and I suspect that the water is very acidic (around ph 6.5 or lower) before they process it. The chemicals raise the ph to 8.0+.

you have to know what your gh and kh as well as knowing what the true ph of your water is before you lower it. More harm will come from not knowing how to manage KH.

If your GH and KH are low like mine, we're in a similar situation. I use api 7.0 proper ph to buffer my water, but I mix it in a 40 gallon bin before pumping it into the tank. You can call or email your water company to get the gh and kh values or get an api test kit for both.
