Yup. Once you hit nitrates that high it is time for a water change.

Change 75% - 80%. @40ppm your Nitrates are very high. What is your WC schedule now?

I feed flakes once a day
I have not done a w/c for a few days I have been sick
so that's why the Nitrate is high

This is part of the reason why everyone's been saying that you need to get a bigger tank. A 55 gal for 2 oscars isn't big enough. If missing w/cs for only a few days makes your nitrates that high (and your oscars are small) then imagine how much more difficult to manage it will get as they get larger.

You'll need to up your water changes to 75 - 80% every other day for now, but your oscar setup is just not sustainable long term.
