Just to let you guys know
most of my tanks I either found on the curve or they were given to me or bought real cheap at a Garage sale
I was given the 55 by a friend who actually kept a Oscar and some tank mates in it
the Oscar jumped out and died witch is sad and he was close to 12 inches they had him for 5 years

my 55 is 12 1/2 inches front to back

A 55 gal is the absolute bare minimum for one oscar, but once the oscar hits 8 - 9" it will need a 75 gal as an absolute minimum. If the oscar ever gets above 13.5" it will need a tank with a minimum 4ftx2ft footprint (so a 90 gal (4 x 2 x 18" high) or a 4x2x2 120 gal).

That makes sense when considering my oscar. He's 9 inches now and I couldn't imagine his still being in a 55g. Often I feel that he needs more room than he has in the 75g. By comparison, a typical betta has more room in a 2.5 gallon than my oscar has in a 75 gallon. Maybe then it shouldn't be all that surprising that many betta fish lovers consider 2.5 gallons too small for a betta.

My mind is on filters right now ... I have to refill my canister with new ceramics. :pinch: Remind me what filters you have on your 55 gallon?

We arent trying to pile on and its good to see that you are receptive to the advice your being given. Must of us are finatics about nitrates and water quality most health issues (not all) come down to the conditions the fish are being kept in. Some oscars can get huge like over 13 inches. A 55 gal is easy to maintain do larger water changes the diff between 50% and 80% would be maybe 10 min. I have a little 3 inch v.argentea in a 55 and dont think ive ever changed less than 75% of the water. Wc remove allot more than nitrates. What does you filtration look like

My parents kept 2 Oscars in a 55 for 2+ years and they almost died. They stopped eating, handle swam around, mostly laying on the bottom or floating at the top, fighting on and off, both of their mouths are crooked now from them lip locking...I didn't know it until recently but they both had hole in the head at some point and that is scary to know what could have happened...I truly believe they would be dead by now if I haven't followed the advice of everyone here...a 55 gallon tank for Oscars is a long painful miserable death sentence.

Stay at home mommy to 4 kids (Ana 11, Joseph 10, Alizabeth 6, and Christian 2) 11 purple pincher hermit crabs, 8 cats, 6 guppies, 2 little molly fish, 3 ferrets, 2 parrakets, 2 Oscars, 1 red eared slider, 1 cockatiel, 1 goldfish, 1 veiled chameleon, and 1 bone headed pittbull. And working with The Mid Atlantic Turtle and Tortoise Association to become a slider foster.

This is not going to work, 2 15 gallon HOB filters are not going to filter a growing Oscar in a 55 gallon tank. I would advise you to not fix the leaking one but replace it ASAP with an Aquaclear 110 and as your Oscar puts on some size you may plan on adding a 2nd one to the tank.

Big messy fish need big filters.

I was going to get a 30 gal filter since that is what I can afford and that will put the filtration at 60 gals
