This may seem random, but I was wondering, what's the longest you've ever kept an oscar before it died? Also, do you believe they have feelings?
Before getting back in to fish, I had a 90g with an albino tiger and a tiger oscar. They were like a couple. When the albino died, the tiger oscar would just sit at the bottom... as if it were depressed
depressed. About a week later it died.
This was last year, and I had both of the for 5 years.

Of the 20 or so Oscars I have had over the last 45yrs, 14yrs was the oldest, with many living well past 10. They don't have feelings per say, but do react to changes in their surroundings. Just speculating, but to have 2 5yr old Oscars pass within a week of each other indicates to me a different cause. 90g is really far too small for 2 Oscars, and these crowded conditions, compounded with probable poor water conditions may well have shortened their lives. An Oscar wont just up and die due to depression. It may well quit eating, but starvation wouldn't take it down for many weeks.

The oldest one I had was pushing 12 years old and 13"+ long, Sarge (Stevie's O) reminds me a lot of him. He died in 1999.

My parents had a pair up until I was 3 or so. I have very vague memories. From what I understand the got huge fast from overfeeding and bad conditions. In the previous no Internet Era people had no clue on what they needed. That pair made it to 12 inches each sharing a 75 gallon with awful filtration. Age wise I think about 7. At that point books and pet shops said you could have a school of Oscars in a 40 gallon.

Lol push 40g! that sounds like something a sales person in the fish section at Wal-Mart or Petsmart would say.

hi there

1. if my memory serves me correct.
2. my first tiger was about a inch big when I bought it home from a lfs for Singapore 0.50c back in the early 70s.
3. that was where my late father and I had this "competition"/bet as to who could keep a better Oscar, oops!
4. fast forward, I undertook an overseas training stint in japan in the midst 80s.
5. I had written to my best pal back in Singapore to check on my beloved tiger from time to time.
6. and reported back to me on its development.
7. the tiger was about 12".
8. currently, I am having 2 5-year-old tigers; black boy and blackie.
