Rogue_Violetta created the topic: Introducing my new buddy...

This is my rescue O I got today. I named her Malekith. (Thor fans will get it)

She's a very strange fish, was quite relaxed and chilled out in the bucket at first, but soon enough, being in the bucket for so long just tried her patience, and she wanted out. She doesn't seem used to having a tank to herself. She likes me, but is wary of Tera, to the point of trying to blend in with a plant at one point. Which was kind of hilarious.

Because she seemed so much more relaxed in the tank (still without full colours) I tried giving her some food, just to see what she'd do. She took the spirulina pellet, looked about ready to swallow it, then spat it back out like a kid with brussels sprouts or broccoli.

She was being housed in a way too small tank (I wasn't there to pick her up, because filter was possibly arriving that day), with some silver sharks, and three plecos. And in Lamm's words "Dude, honest to god plecos." *holds hands apart about 15-20cm* (correct me if the size is wrong, I'm not good at measuring hands, it's just a picture in my head of the fish inbetween the hands)

She's about 25cm long, and will need to go into a bigger tank asap. Which she will. Her current tank is about 50-60g, and 4ft long. It's a weird measurement one, but her next tank is, well, pretty close. And we're starting to doze off on the couch when there's a knock on the door. The new filter had arrived. We were just too tired to rinse it out, but Tera started putting pieces together, and figuring it out. Then we went to bed, and I woke up... 4 hours later. So, here I am telling you about my Malekith.

Here's the pics, but first of all... The first pic is the original nitrate test. Acclimation took about 2- 2 1/2 hours. We had to rush it at the end when her patience wore out, so not exactly sure on the time. Nitrates were tested again, when new water was about 6 parts new to 1 old... and showed up somewhere between 40 and 80ppm. She's a miracle fish, tough despite the odds, and worthy of her name.

The guy who had her said he'd had her 'about a year'. I'll let Tera or Lamm describe the fish keeping there, as they actually saw it.

So, pics.

It was definitely over 160ppm, but the tube's lying down and flash was used.

There's more to come, and I'll keep everyone updated here on her progress. She's quite an enigma, I've found.

Thanks. :) She's not 100% yet, and is now refusing to eat food, just chews it, then spits it out all mangled, and I have no idea what she was fed before, so...

She's still a bit pale.

I think she's actually Lutino, because she has darker patches on her- mostly on the upper fin, and in the tail.

If she is chewing and trying the food, that is a good sign. May well come around soon once she settle's in. Very nice looking fish. Appropriate name too as I think another member has a lutino O that is named Thor.

Yeah, she's mangling the food, so she's chewing it. It's like she just doesn't like it. Probably a lot different to what she's used to. Hoping I'll find something that she eats, and can then introduce her to the wonders of cichlid food.

She's also now decided to sit on the bottom when I come in to see her, but as I have to turn on the lounge lights, she may just be unhappy with that. I do get the impression it may be a kind of game as well, as she sits there just watching me, then moves.

Her metabolism seems to be kicking in- the bottom of the tank is covered with piles of poop, so water change soon! Right after many of those pics were taken, she did a huge poop, and it seems she's still going...

Ooh, I'll have to try and find that Thor... I know there's a few on here! ;)

I guess there are different levels of lutino but my Vicky must be super lutino. Her fins are black and has a hearty amount of gray in her sides. It's gotten darker as she's grown. Regardless that's great you got her into a better situation. If she's at least testing the food it's surely a good sign.
