Silca sand is neutral and won't affect Ph levels.

I have pool sand in 3 of my tanks, no change with PH in either if them.

I have more as one tank and in 2 cases PFS with an high amount of lime to most likley made it more caused an pH peak. I also said it can but it don't have to do than quality can switch very high on PFS.

You just voiced my thoughts, Daddadoo. Different countries often have different rules and quality controls. (Some of Australia's are just o.O )

I've also heard driftwood is good for an O tank, as you can sand the sharp edges too, to help reduce the possibility of injury. And tannins in the water which are good. (For some reason that always makes me think of tea.)

If the sand is made of pure silica (which is the majority of PFS) it will not affect Ph. If the PFS is made with Calcium carbonate (some are - comprised of bones or other skeletal remains) then it can raise the Ph. I guess one needs to make sure that the sand is made of pure silica and not mixed with CC. A good thing to know. Perhaps some countries import one over the other.

Exactly this, worded it better than I could Poseidon. A blanket statement that all pool filter sands will affect pH is inaccurate. Silica sands are inert.

I have heard, however, that silica sands can contribute to brown algae. I used Ace Hardware brand PFS in my 150 and had a *lot* of brown algae until I got my pleco.

Of course this may be a case of Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

I've heard that too, but funnily enough the only tank of mine that had any algae whatsoever is my RD's tank with gravel

Hey all so which rocks should I take out? The one against the log is what keeps the log down so that HAS to stay. Should I take out 2 of the 4 middle ones?
