Phillipw311 created the topic: Oscar Fish Growth Rate

Hello all! I am new to the Oscar fish world and new to the forum as well! I recently got my first ever Oscar after I set up and cycled my tank. He is in a 55 gallon long tank all by himself. I love him! He's very enjoyable and fascinating to me to watch. Very interesting little fish. I have always wanted one, but sadly I haven't ever had the water volume to own one. Yes I realize I am still cutting it close with a 55 gallon... It's all I could afford, but if I feel like he needs a bigger one I will start saving up. I love aquatics and it's always been my dream to have a much larger tank than anything I have ever owned. One day I would like to make this a smaller cichlid tank and move my Oscar to a 75-100 gallon tank. Anyways, he is a BABY. I cannot express that enough. He is maybe 2.5" at the most. Due to his size I only change about 30-50% of the water weekly. I know when he gets older I will have to do 50% twice weekly or 75% once weekly. Whichever is more suitable. I love fish and love the challenge of taking care of them and keeping them happy. So he will by no means whatsoever be neglected. I am just wondering, in a healthy, maintained 55 gallon by himself, how fast should he be growing?? I am super anxious to watch him grow over the months, but I feel like it's like trying to watch the grass grow if that makes sense.. Haha I cannot tell hardly any difference in his size and we're going on 4 weeks together. I feed him a variety of different pellet brands. Every now and then he will act bored with a particular pellet and will spit it out. I cant hardly get him to take them. I've learned that if I will switch to a different pellet brand he'll start eating again. So I go in a rotation basically. That's what I have found works best for my Oscar. He eats every morning, when I get home from work, and at night prior to me going to bed. If it were up to him, he'd eat every 2-3 minutes... HA! I just want to know if he should be growing noticeably fast. Did you all that have large to fully grown Oscars notice them growing or is it more so gradual since you see them every day?? It's hard to say for me. Also, is there anything else I can do to promote growth? The water is kept at a consistent 79 degrees Fahrenheit. I have the API master kit and I check it frequently so I always know where my water quality conditions stand. I also have a python water changer. For filtration I have a traditional HOB filter for a 50 gallon tank and a Fluval 306 Canister filter that filters like 260 gallons of water per hour. Let me know what you guys think please! I will post a picture of him from the week I bought him below. He looks about the same to me now. Maybe just a smidge longer at the most.

Wow he is gorgeous. Killer patterns. He will grow FAST. I have the 306 also its awesome. Anyway he could grow an inch per month at his age and that's just length. He can a most likely will get thick also. My Red O went from just under 3 inch to an easy 6 and I can't even judge his increase in overall mass and that was in just under 4 months. I also had him in a way undersized tank with awful filtration to start with. God knows how large he would be if he was alone in a well maintained 55 from the get go. Great job not pulling a me and getting him in a healthy environment from day 1. Welcome to the forum. Everyone here is super experienced and will give you priceless advice that you can't get in pet shops. Post a thread with any questions or concerns you may have and you will get great advice from serious fish keepers. Post more pics and video if possible. Your little dude looks great.

That's a great looking Oscar you have there. Tankspace, clean water and quality diet will dictate growth to a large degree. It seems you are providing quality care for the wee guy. Generally, an Oscar will grow on average an inch a month from the age of 3 to 9-10 months. Baby Oscars in the 1in range are about 3 months old. I find the growth spurt occurs most between 5-9ins. Its not uncommon for Oscars to reach a foot long by 1yr old. Genetics plays a role, some grow faster than others, some become 16in monsters, some max out around a foot. Keep providing quality care, prepare for a bigger tank before he reaches 9ins. I would suggest a minimum 50% weekly w/c, and you are correct in assuming more will be in order as he grows. Keep us posted, again, that's a quite striking specimen of Tiger Oscar. Congrats!

Nothing else to add the guys have you covered. Just take lots of photos and in a few months you will see significant growth, you just have to stop looking for it, something we have all done.

If you only saw the fish once a week then you would definitely see a difference in its size. However, when you're looking at the fish every day it's not always that noticeable. Suppose it's a little bit like kids, before you know where they are there really big, but you don't really notice it at the time. But only see them every few months and is very noticeable.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Nothing to add to Suprd71's advice accept that you might consider removing about half of the substrate it is more than you need and will attract and trap unwanted waste that could increase your nitrate levels. You really only need to have just enough to cover the glass on the bottom.

Good job and great looking little fish you have there.

Oh wow thank you so much guys!!! I thought his colors were on point as an infant.. haha I love his colors and the distinct pattern he has right now. Even as a baby and by himself, his colors REALLY pop in this aquarium. I've looked at multiple full grown tiger Oscars but none that look close to his pattern. I am worried he will have fatter more solid stripes and less of them when he gets older based off the fully grown ones I have seen.. It'll be bittersweet the day that starts to change if so... I love his pattern. Do you guys think his pattern will begin to change with age or do you think he will just get larger and larger while still maintaining the same color pattern?? I would love for him to stay this exact same pattern and scheme he has now, but just be fully grown. Haha. He only looks like that when he is eating or trying to make his colors pop. If he gets spooked or is sulking his colors fade out and he gets pretty pale. As an infant he's usually in the middle to light color range. Some days he's darker than others and gets really dark when he chooses to. I guess it's just the juvenile tiger Oscar temperament! What do you guys think as far as his pattern changing?? I honestly don't have a clue. All of the other tiger Oscars I see at the store that are bigger than him are ALL almost black with very little orange compared to the way he looks now.

His pattern is most likely going to change a good bit to more like you see in adult tigers but I will say he is one of the more vivid baby O's I've ever seen so he has a great chance at being a gorgeous adult.

Yeah that was my thoughts exactly OFL! Thanks for the input, positive comments, and support guys!!! I need this forum and people like you all!!! I haven't found ONE person in ANY LFS that really knows anything about Oscars. The LFS guys giving me advice don't have and or haven't ever had an Oscar. I just think to myself, "how can you possibly offer advice about something you know literally nothing about whatsoever...? If you don't know just say you don't know don't lie directly to my face with all of this false information..." Haha that's why I am glad to have found this place!!!
