Stumpy created the topic: My lil Stumpy

I got my Oscar Stumpy last month. He/she is 3 years old, so I was told. But Stumpy is only about 7 inches. Any idea how his growth got stunted? When I got him the water and gravel were just filthy. I cleaned everything up, and Stumpy is eating like crazy. But he won't eat the feeder fish for some reason.
When i got him she said she feeds him once a day, and only 3 or 4 pellets. That sounded odd to me, because my step-dad fed his twice a day, and alot more than 3 pellets.
She also only had one filter on the 40 gallon tank, now Stumpy has 2 on the tank.
Any advice would be very helpful. Ty

Fish is stunted from living in dirty water in a too small of tank. At that age it only needs feed every 2nd day. Do not use feeder fish, its the worst thing to offer. Quality pellet with some treats of fruit veg, freeze dried krill. You should get him a bigger tank, and offer as much clean water as possible. 2x weekly large volume water changes

At 3yrs damage is most likely done. Not impossible to grow some more but it will never reach the size of the average Oscar. Clean water, tankspace and quality diet are the major keys to keeping healthy cichlids. Stumpy unfortunately had none of these going for him. Good of you to provide better for him, but dont be surprised if he doesnt get too many yrs in. A 75g tank would be a good investment to better his chances

Good stuff.. meanwhile, keep the water clean, dont overfeed. How about some pics of Stumpy? Maybe something else needs addressing?

Easiest way is via Photobucket. Its a no charge image hosting site. Load pics into your PB library. Copy the img code of the pic(s) you want to forward, and paste directly into the forum thread box. For videos YouTube is best

Why only feed every other day? He's always begging for pellets. Maybe it will help him grow?
