pupfishes created the topic: Aquarium size and fighting

Hi All,

I have a 7" Red spotted Severum and a 10" oscar in a 75" tank, both been in there for about 2 years together. They just started fighting out of no where. I need a quick fix as I'm not letting go of either fish. I built a rock-solid divider in the tank, that gives them both two feet till I can get my permanent plan in place. Will this be OK for a few weeks? I have to deal with it, but I also can't just come up hundreds of dollars like that, a new thank, where to put it no less and I don't know anyone that can hold them for now. Right now they both seem fine. They're swimming around eating, playing as usual, yup both fish have toys I kid you not. My oscar has a plastic shot glass that he loves bossing around. My Severum has a tube she swims back and forth through over and over.

Are the fish getting injured quite badly?

There isn't really a quick fix to stop aggression, apart from either rehoming one of the fish, or getting yourself a much bigger aquarium. I'm afraid that the aggression will just continue if left together. It could be a case that one of am is becoming sexually mature. See if the aggression is sporadic. However, if the fish are getting injured then it's not fair to leave them together.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Lets say I had a tank that was 6 feet long as the current one is 4' long. Do you think this would make a difference? I mean, that's so huge, you would think that they would be happy with so much space for themselves? Or would it not matter and would I still potentially have to split them up? I was thinking of possibly getting a 125Gal. and going to my LFS and finding a third fish. Then I would do the following. Put the new fish in the tank, maybe something like another Oscar or something compatible. Then put in my Severum, she's such a good fish. The Oscar attacks her, but she's actually able to control him and her bite does more damage to his mouth than the Oscar does to her. So even though he attacks the Severum, the oscar would ultimately die in the end as she bites chunks of his mouth and can tear him. He's such a silly fish but I love my fish, so I have to think of something. Anyhow, I would introduce my Oscar last. Perhaps creates sections with large plastic plants anchored down with large rocks?

I appreciate if anyone has some suggestions.

i am not sure if it will be ok with you but if i were in your shoes, i will be using a mesh divider to avoid any i juries until you find a bigger tank.. once they started to create territory, they will always size up one another until they find out who is the boss... until such time...injury could always happen
