Skywalkstr95 created the topic: Questions & concerns

Lately ive had a few different concerns about my oscars but they arent the same concerns i had last time this time my albino oscar is looking really healthy i can tell hes growing happy and has a good appetite, my other oscar on the other hand isnt as hungry hasnt shown much growth and wont open his fins all the way (if you dont know what i mean ill post a video) so im worried he may be having nitrat poisoning?

I went and got a large canister filter today its a marine land Magnum polishing large canister filter it says it for up to 97 ghallons and filters up to 290 gal / hour it doesnt have an adjustable flow but the guy at the store saidd it would be good on my tank what do you guys think?

im removing the tetras today wether its to a fish store or finding a friend but my oscar tails look lik something tried to nibble on them and i think it was the tetras but im not sure could that be why the tiger oscar wont open his fins??

It's always difficult situations like this when one fish is perfectly okay and the other one isn't. All I can say is just monitor the situation, have a look for any parasites on the fish, sometimes they clamp their fins if they have skin parasites.

If you are starting the canister filter from fresh and it will take a few weeks before it's fully cycled. However, you could take a little bit of media from your existing filter and put it in the canister to give it a bit of a kick start.

You didn't say how big your tank is, however this canister filter certainly sounds as if it's a great addition to what you already have.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Sorry about that mentioned it in a earlier post 55 gallons( planning to upgrade because i know its too small), i might try switching the media but im not exactly sure how right now ive jus been running them side by side til it cycles but im worried that may be too strong for a 55?

Really sorry for your loss, I know that you have been trying to do the right thing.

Remove the carbon-it's not good for Oscars.

I have no idea about the cubes you mention-hopefully someone else can advise.

You need to restart your canister-it won't cycle if it's switched off. Flow rate did not kill your Oscar, a filter rated for a 97 gallon tank is not too strong for a 55-even in conjunction with your other filter. Unfortunately most likely cause was poor water conditions-help your remaining fish by providing as much filtration and clean water as possible.

Okay i removed the carbon cubes and turned it back on after reading that the albino oscar is still alive but hes looking sluggish should i do a water change even if the new filter hasnt cycled yet? i also found someone to take those tetras off my hands

How long should i run the filters together? checked my amazon today and my test kit will be here tomorrow before 8pm! so thats exciting i also have some rock decorations on the wayand a volcano bubbler is it good for oscars to have a bubbler in their tank?

Water changes do not affect tank cycling, provided you use, if necessary a quality dechlorinator. The beneficial bacteria you need is not free swimming in the water column. It lives and grows primarily in your filters bio media. Some will cling to substrate and deco, but not enough to worry about. Run all filters 24/7. Your new filter will take approx 2 months to grow its own bacteria, Do not shut off, do not open or clean during this time. You cannot do too many or to much volume of water changes in an Oscar tank. Procedure is this.. drain and vac at the same time. Add conditioner. Refill as close to the same temperature as possible. Do this as often as possible, likely every day until you can test for toxins and get a handle on your nitrate creep. Keep nitrate under 20ppm at all times. Closer to 10 is better.
