That sucks!

A hard lesson learned, but hopefully one that will benefit you and your fish in the future.

You need to cycle your filter; I would recommend going down the fishless cycle route using pure ammonia as your food source. You will find plenty of info on this site about how to go through the process. I'd post a link if I knew how but you will find it by using the search.

It will take some time-maybe 4 weeks, maybe 8. The key is patience. I can't emphasise that enough, there are no shortcuts. In the meantime you have plenty of time to research more about your chosen fish.

In your 55 you will be looking at 1 Oscar and nothing else and to be honest with you I wouldn't keep an Oscar in a tank of that size. You may want to consider different cichlids or if you are set on Oscars-get that 125 ASAP.

You can still cycle your filter with your current tank and then simply switch it across.

Good luck and keep asking questions-we're all here to help each other along.
