C_hall2009 created the topic: My 3 month oscar has a buldge by anus

Hi I have a 3 month old red O and his anus is bulging, not very badly but enough to get my attention. Seems to be acting like normal. I feed him and my albino tiger O 2 times a day, my tiger is perfect. They are obviously to young to start laying eggs so I don't think it has to do with that. Water levels are good, I do a 30% water change on my 50gal once a week, sometimes I wait a week and a half. Any ideas?

Hi there and welcome to our little community.

Can you post a photograph?

I've seen similar things before and sometimes it's a slight blockage just inside the anus. What you may find happens is the Oscar will produce a massive turd at some stage. But if you can take a photo it would be helpful.

Hello and welcome to OFL. In 1/2 cup of distilled water, dissolve 3/4 tbsp of pure epsom salt. Saturate 1 normal feeding per day in this water. Feed this for 5 consecutive days. Wont harm the other Oscar either. Good for both. Now, for longer term issues. Your tank isnt big enough for 2 Oscars, regardless of current fish size. Not even big enough for a single adult. You need to change far more water than you are. MINIMUM twice a week at 75% per change. What kind of food and how much do you give the fish? Cut back until hopefully the problem clears.

I'm not real sure how to post pictures to this forum but it was 3 huge turds! It finally came out and he's back to normal size. I feed them 2 times a day, brine shrimp at night and oscar food pelets in the morning. I'll change water more and soon I'll be getting a larger tank for sure. Thank you guys for the tips and help! I wish I could post the pic of my O because he's supposed to be a red oscar but he's more orange and greenish brown then anything. He's brightened up alot since I've had him, he was super dull.

you should try to feed him some food with plant matter in it oscars are omnivorous and do best with some in their diet it can help keep them regular as well

to post pictures you need to upload them to a photo hosting websites like photobucket or something similar

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next

Northfin veg formula, kelp wafers. New Life Spectrum Algaemax are very good veg based feed for Oscar. Hikari Excel is medium grade. Extra vitamin C is a huge bonus as well. Try some fruit pieces on them. Orange, mango, pears. If they will eat some thats great.
