Sounds like Nitrate piosoning. You should get your own test kit. Testing your water is very important for disease diagnosis. Most diseases are directly related to water quality issue's. I think a large water change followed by several small ones over the next couple of days is in order. Fish meds are a very general cure most should not be used until the last resort. Many meds kill off your Bio-bacteria and I only use them when things look grim.

If you want more info you need to post a few more details
1- size of tank
2- amonia
3- nitrite
4- nitrate
5- ph
6- gh

Then we can help you to recovery.

You must get yourself a water test Kit, or get someone to test it for you. We just can't really help you at the moment without knowing what the water conditions.

It would be like going to the doctor with terrible pains in the stomach and him not examining you, he wouldn't be able to diagnose anything.

How often do you do water changes? How do you wash your filtration? The fact that the fish is breathing heavily is a really bad sign I am sorry to say. There could be many factors that make your fish do this. Ill-health would definitely make a fish breathe heavily. Lack of oxygen in the water could also make them do this. Ammonia and nitrite poisoning is certainly a possibility. I would suggest that you stop feeding altogether. Take the feeders out straight away and follow Mr crackers instructions by doing the water change every day. If your water is contaminated with toxins, you can at least help reduce them by doing this. However, your fish sounds in a really bad way. Please please get a water test Kit, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. I really can't emphasise enough how important having water test kits is. Can you also please tell us your tank maintenance regime, especially how you clean your filtration. There may be something you're not doing correctly and we may be able to put you on the straight and narrow so this doesn't happen again.

I agree with mr cracker and OFL. Do as big a water change as possible everyday until things are sorted.

When I first kept fish I didnt do much off the water changes. I also had a parrot fish and I used to put lots of food in to make sure the parrot got some(They have a funny deformed type mouth). after a while the parrot died. Then a few days later my oscar was lethargic and couldnt swim properly. I called my friend and he suggested replacing most of the water. Immediately the oscar perked up and seemed fine. Lack of maintenace caused the problem. I hope this is all that is wrong with your oscar

ok here is the scoop.PH ,nitrates, ammonia all normal.water is good according to the guy i got to test it. removed feeders before i even read the above posts.stoped feeding him because he isnt hungry, he is laying on the bootom on his side, air filtration is fine. besides the cure all meds, i also added some stress coat water conditioner, i did close to a 40% water change a wk ago, and i just did another 20% one yesterday, still no improvement

i usualy do water changes once a month, i dont clean the filtartion system with tap water,(basicaly i dont clean it, i just change the cartridges when needed) i never clean the bio- wheels.
what should i do?
1 should i continue the water changes?
2 should i use the meds?

That's too bad mate :( I really am ever so sorry, I've lost Oscars before so I know how you feel.

To be honest, I'm not surprised this happened, your Oscar didn't sound in a good way at all. I didn't want to say anything yesterday but the situation certainly sounded dire. Have you emptied the tank yet? If not, I would advise you to get yourself a test kits, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. Test the water as soon as you can. You might give an indication of what might have caused this to happen.

Anyway, we're all here to help if you are going to start over again.

I watched this thread pretty closely. I lost an Oscar recently to symptoms very similar to yours. I baffled me because my water chemistry was all normal and none of the other fish showed any symptoms. My only guess is that it was something that came into the aquarium with my feeders. I've come to realize that feeder fish are kind of like Russian Roulette. I will probably never know what killed mine. But certainly keep us updated on any info you can about you aquariums water chemistry. Get that test kit and do the tests EXACTLY how the instructions say to. Really, the results would be beneficial to all of us.

Keeping fish is only as hard as you choose to make it.

Sorry to hear about your oscar. It seems to me that most oscar keepers loose a fish as some point for no obvious reason. I know I have and its gutting. Im afraid that is what happens when you keep livestock. But to us is isnt livestock its our pal and buddy!!!
