06450F created the topic: I got the Ich :(

Man im only a couple weeks into having the Oscar craze and my tank has the Ich.

I did some vast reading and wow my 2.5" black tiger has all the signs of the Ich.

About 10 small white spots that look like sugar, he sits under the filter, loss of appetite, timid, lays on bottom.

Ive read several ways to cure the Ich and it looks like im going to try several to rid myself of this mess for good.

Tell me if what im doing sounds good.

1) Going to do a 25% water change tomorrow morning, get my heat up a couple degrees to about 80 and then add my Ich meds. I plan to do this for the duration of the directions on the meds, 4-5 days.

2) Next i plan to do a full heat cycle after the meds are done. Im going to slowly raise my heat to about 85 degrees and leave it warm for a solid 5 days, until i slowly lower it back to 78.

I already keep a solid mix of salt in the tank and that has not prevented the problem so it seems the meds are my next option.

My issue is i will be able to do meds tomorrow, thurs, fri, and sat but will not be around my tank again until monday.
Should i stop the meds after Sat or resume on Monday for a few days?

I need to get my little buddy up and swim'n again.

This should tell you what you need to know. Remember that once the cysts are showing, meds aren't effective

OFL's Article is pretty comprehensive. It gives you plenty of options for treating ich. Your strategy is pretty involved. What meds are you using anyway?

Personally, I'm with copper all the way. You bring up the heat, raise copper to your target level over 48 hours, and wait ten days. That's as simple as it gets. I've used it on my clown loaches and they didn't mind one bit. Another bonus us that Copper test kits are cheap and readily available. Overdosing with any treatment isn't hard to do. You may not have a good idea of how much of your aquariums volume is really water and not gravel, decorations, fish, etc.

I'm curious though, You say you can only count ten cysts on your fish? That's actually really light as far as ich goes. The fact that you O is already having difficulties should be cause for concern. It may have many more of them in it's gills that you cannot see. I'd also check all of your nitrogen levels first, and proceed with caution. If you were planning on treating with Malachite Green, I'd hold off. That stuff could kill a weakened fish long before it kills off the ich.

Keeping fish is only as hard as you choose to make it.

Two people who have been on here in the past with White spot problems have been advised to turn the temperature of up to around 30°C for around five days. This normally does the trick.

The meds only kill the parasites when their not on the fish. I would still add them though, so that anymore of them hoping to get on the fish will be killed. Yes, raise the temps high etc. Oh, and if you have any inverts(like shrimps and snails) or scaleless fish(such as clown loaches) these guys don't take to well to medicene. If you do have fish like these move them to another tank and add half the reccomended dose.

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the input guys.

Well he doesn't seem to be "too" weak, just not as active as the fish who doesn't have the specs.

The meds i got are from the fish store, can't recall the name as my tank is in my office at work; but the stuff turned the water purple/blue'ish for a few moments after adding it. The fish didn't seem to mind the meds at all.

I do understand that the pest is only killed while in a particular stage of its life. That is why i was worried about missing a day of meds; that i may miss the vital day to kill them off. I will have 4 days in a row of meds with the tank temp up into the mid 80's. I hope this does the trick for killing the Ich. I do plan to keep the temps in the mid 80's for several days longer and "hope" to rid my tank of this mess.

A question i do have though. As long as i do not add other fish or other water i should not have to worry about being exposed to the "Ich" again right?

I wouldn't say that. When I had my 29g communtiy tank I had some severe ich problems. I had eventually treated it, but I only had half the fish remaining. Nevertheless I bought no fish. I didn't bother continueing treating the water with more meds after it was gone..then woke up to realize ich had plagued again.

If you have jungle parasite clear, or a product containing copper your better off killing the ich if you didn't read the article already...

Once you Truly irradiate the Ich, it should be gone. I've heard people argue that Ich is ever present in aquariums, but I've kept fish in fairly bad conditions in the past. (High nitrate plus low oxygen) I've never had a mysterious resurgence of Ich. Ich has an easier time invading a fishes gills than is does their slime coated scales. So it's possible for several generations of Ich to go unnoticed in an aquarium. I think that is where the notion that fish can "catch" Ich comes from. That's another reason why I love Copper. Once at concentration, the Ich is screwed. 10 days in the mid-eighties runs three generations of the parasite into the toxic water and basically guaranties eradication. Plus, copper is a heavy metal. It is impossible for them to build immunity to it.

Keeping fish is only as hard as you choose to make it.
